Re: DWM Hackers Unite! Share (or request) dwm patches.

When the thread title says "share or request patches" it doesn't mean there is a takeaway option...

Try and patch it in yourself and, if it errors out, open a separate thead with the details. Basically, though, if you aren't prepared to learn how to do it, use another wm.

Re: DWM Hackers Unite! Share (or request) dwm patches.

Fair enough smile

/EDIT

When patching, do I need to edit the PKGBUILD for rebuilding after I patch?
Seems like dwm.c gets overwritten whenever I run makepkg.

Okay, here's a request.
Could you edit my dwm.c to leave place for conky on the bottom of the screen, BOTTOM_BAR_HEIGHT should be 13. Thank you smile

 * dynamic window manager is designed like any other X client as well. It is
 * driven through handling X events. In contrast to other X clients, a window
 * manager selects for SubstructureRedirectMask on the root window, to receive
 * events about window (dis-)appearance. Only one X connection at a time is
 * allowed to select for this event mask.
 *
 * The event handlers of dwm are organized in an array which is accessed
 * whenever a new event has been fetched. This allows event dispatching
 * in O(1) time.
 *
 * Each child of the root window is called a client, except windows which have
 * set the override_redirect flag. Clients are organized in a linked client
 * list on each monitor, the focus history is remembered through a stack list
 * on each monitor. Each client contains a bit array to indicate the tags of a
 * client.
 *
 * Keys and tagging rules are organized as arrays and defined in config.h.

Try what you see here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 84#p939184
Or, try this one: http://lists.suckless.org/dev/0907/0644.html

Works as a charm. Thanks!

I ran an older dwm.c and just switched to 6.0 so things changed a bit big_smile

Re: DWM Hackers Unite! Share (or request) dwm patches.

I just whipped up a simple close button in the statusbar. I often found myself not willing to move my hands to the keyboard when I do have the mouse at reach (e.g. when watching a movie a bit further away from the keyboard). The glyph it would show is configurable in config.h and it appears next to the layout symbol. You can find it on my GitHub here: https://github.com/Unia/DWM/blob/master … ymbol.diff

See this post for a screenshot: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p1255814

Re: DWM Hackers Unite! Share (or request) dwm patches.

@Unia: I don't see it. Is it that dot?
Also, what does it close, the focused application?

How clean the closing is? Will Firefox report a crashed session when closed that way?

It's the dot indeed, yes. It closes the currently focused application, in the same way you would kill it with DWM's keybinding: it simply calls killclient()

Re: DWM Hackers Unite! Share (or request) dwm patches.

Hi,

I have two screens, actually I have the same tags for the two screens. Is there a patch to configure which screen has which tag ?

Thanks.

Re: DWM Hackers Unite! Share (or request) dwm patches.

There is this patch: http://dwm.suckless.org/patches/single_tagset

Otherwise, there is a rudimentary patch available that allows you to set up tags for each monitor, I want to test it myself but I haven't yet: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.misc.suckless/4230

Re: DWM Hackers Unite! Share (or request) dwm patches.

You have to specify in which monitor you want your application to be shown :

{ "Thunderbird",    NULL,   NULL,   1 << 1, False,  1 },

The last "1" is for the second monitor (0 for the first monitor), so Thunderbird will be shown in the second tag of my second monitor.

Oke great, that takes away my last concern with this patch. I'm not at home though and I won't be for the coming weeks, but once I'm home I'll test this.

Thanks!

Re: DWM Hackers Unite! Share (or request) dwm patches.

You can, but you'd have to write all of that from scratch as there is no mechanism in dwm to read from a configuration file.

You could see my poject 'iocane' which uses a very similar data structure for keybindings as dwm (maybe the exact same), but it allocates and fills this structure at run time by reading an rc file.

Specifically, this is on lines 86-107 of iocane.c.  I see I don't use the same structure as I've dropped modifier keys and use a `char *` rather than dwm's union type.  But the process would be the same: you'd read in the file line by line (or entry by entry), realloc the keys pointer, and fill the new keys entry with what was read from the file.  You should then also add something to the close/cleanup functions to free anything you allocated.

If that that all makes sense, then it should be pretty easy to do.  If that makes no sense, the you probably shouldn't tinker with the code that much.

Re: DWM Hackers Unite! Share (or request) dwm patches.

Another (more easy) solution would be to start DWM with this script through .xinitrc:

#!/bin/bash
while true; do
    dwm >/dev/null 2>&1
done

You can quit DWM but since it's called from an infinite loop, it will just restart itself.

Re: DWM Hackers Unite! Share (or request) dwm patches.

Restarting is easy, he was asking about having an rc file in which he could change key bindings.

Just out of curiosity: Why exactly do you want this?  The lack of such a file---the fact that all user configuration variables are hard-coded into the binary---is one of the only things that makes DWM fundamentally different from other tilers, and is done for specific reasons (simpler installation and program structure, no unused cruft in the filesystem, increased speed, minimal risk of breaking, etc.).  I guess I just get a little confused any time I see someone try out a new piece of software, who immediately tries to make it identical to some other piece of software. tongue

Re: DWM Hackers Unite! Share (or request) dwm patches.

Hi,

I want to share with you with a hack which is very useful for me (and maybe it will be also useful for somebody else). It change the toggleview function behaviour which now will pull the new tag to master rather than into the stack (technically it will pull the first client from the new pulled tag to master).

+	unsigned int found = 0;

 	if(newtagset) {

This patch is especially useful when you assign different clients to different tags and then you pull the clients using the toggleview function. This workflow is clearly explain here why tags ≠ workspaces.

Re: DWM Hackers Unite! Share (or request) dwm patches.

RE: ANOKNUSA's comment on risk of breaking: implementing a *basic* rc file mechanism like I referred to in iocane is rather trivial - but this trivial mechanism 'trusts' the user: if they do something wrong with the rc file, the program could easily crash and burn.  Programs that read an rc file in a more sophisticated way and have proper checks for anything that could go wrong (such as i3) devote a good amount of code to this.

Just look at the code: dwm, 1 source file + 1 config.h + 1 makefile with a couple thousand lines of code total; i3, 69 C source files, 64 headers, 130 perl files 10 makefiles with 42 thousand lines of code.

Re: DWM Hackers Unite! Share (or request) dwm patches.

@Trillby: I get all that; I just see it as a big plus for DWM relative to other window managers that, on top of its other benefits, it has two safeguards between the user and a broken X session: patching error messages and compiler error messages.  I've tried some good WMs, but I was always a bit annoyed that some other window managers tend to just revert to a default configuration any time you make a simple error somehwere in a 600-line config file, rather than just dropping to console and telling me what the error is (If I recall right, Subtle and WMFS do a good job of telling you what and where the error is after a crash).  With DWM, so long as one has correctly applied patches (and you know if you did before DWM is installed), then one will likely only change a handful of lines in config.h from time to time.  No risk of carelessly deleting some vital line in a text editor, or accidentally removing necessary files.

Of course DWM isn't perfect; for example, it looks like Raziel23 might have found a solution to something that's bugged me for a while. wink  Thanks Raziel.

I glad that this patch will be useful not only for me, but I think it shouldn't be send to the suckless mailing list because it change the toggleview behaviour and thus it will not be include to the official code. On the other hand it may be a good idea to add it to the suckless wiki. You can feel free to do that.

Isn't a patch supposed to change behaviour? In any case, it's always worth a shot - especially if other people find it usefull too.
