Display port KVM Switch with AMD 7770

A strange problem I am having, when using a KVM switch between 2 Arch workstations,
when using the xf86-video-ati driver, the switch fails to occur leaving a blank screen.

The suspect workstation has the following card:
lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Cape Verde XT [Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition]

When I use xf86-video-fbdev I can use the KVM switch fine, when I use xf86-video-ati,
pressing the KVM switch results in a blank screen (even when plugging in other monitors,
it is like evdev has stopped working).

I would prefer to use xf86-video-ati drivers, so any advice welcome, I am not sure
where to start looking as the Xorg.0.logs don't show anything suspicious (nor does journalctl or dmesg)

Could be a signal timing issue between suspect - kvm - monitor .

Set the kvm switch to connect monitor with the suspect, then power off the monitor.
Wait  ~ 10 seconds, power the monitor on.

If that doesn't help, setup ssh access on the suspect workstation so you can connect to it remotely and investigate while it's in the problem state.
