cdrom: open failed ?

Well I decided to try installing the current kernel26 (2.6.13.4-3 or 2.6.13-ARCH, according to 'uname -r') using pacman. I also had to change to using udev. And -- it was much easier than I imagined! Great distro and great pacman tool!!  big_smile

Now when booting I see a new message (which also appears in dmesg along with the message about my cdrom given in the subject of this new topic). Here are the lines from dmesg:

   ts: Compaq touchscreen protocol output
   cdrom: open failed.
   Adding 1020088k swap on /dev/hda1.  Priority:-1 extents:1
EXT3 FS on hdb5, internal journal
   cdrom: open failed.

My questions:

1. Why the first line (my machine is a PC tower with an LCD monitor, but nothing from Compaq and no touchscreen)?

2. Why "cdrom: open failed"? Is this something to be worried about or is it just telling me that I cannot eject CDs from within a program, but have to do it manually by pressing the little eject button on the cdrom drive?

Finally, I don't really notice much speed increase when booting now that hwdetect is activated and hotplug has been deactivated in rc.conf -- maybe I was just expecting too much or maybe the increase is only noticed when many more modules must be loaded than is the case on my box.  :?

Thanks in advance,

Re: cdrom: open failed ?

ts: Compaq touchscreen protocol output

I have seen that messages on and off on my pc, usually when something failed on shutdown or was not done right on startup.

The first happened mostly when rebooting after a pacman -Syu and was gone at the next boot.

After a while i interpreted the message as some kind of generic error, and checked the logs for errors.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: cdrom: open failed ?

Well, maybe the "compaq touchscreen" line is nothing serious, I just don't care to be running anything that I don't need to be running during boot-up or afterwards. Everything seems to be working just fine so I'm happy.  big_smile

The only current problem is that I'm on the road now and don't have a notebook or anything, so I'm stuck using windows machines at the local library to do my emailing...  roll

Can't wait to get back onto a computer with a really good OS: Arch!!
