Compiz 0.8.x missing

I am aware of that compiz is dropped from the repos, but I cannot find the packages in the AUR. The 0.9.x versions are made for Ubuntu as a compositor, so it is buggy as a standalone window manager.
Anyone knows where the old pkgbuilds have gone (core, plugins, emerald)?

Re: Compiz 0.8.x missing

Some PKGBUILD are here: http://vabs.archlinux-br.org/i686/community/C/ but I don't know if these are the latest ones.
compiz & Co. is not in ABS anymore, but if anyone still has these PKGBUILDs, they can post them.

Re: Compiz 0.8.x missing

I too miss those packages. I tried to find them in the https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/ list, but no avail. Which is strange for me, I thought a revisioning system would keep deleted files. Can someone help us find compiz in the past of git/svn?

No, these are very old. The date is 03-Aug-2011 for compiz 0.8.8-2, and the newest is compiz-core 0.8.8-5 built at 01 May 2013 according to the package I have in the cache. Note that the package names have also changed since then.

Re: Compiz 0.8.x missing

I think that if there are some foo-git or foo-no-gnome packages already maintained in the AUR, the foo packages that get dropped from the repos do not appear in the AUR.

I belive that is the case, too.
But compiz 0.9.x is completely different from 0.8.x, because it is a branch adopted by canonical for Ubuntu and have broken many things that are not required for them in a compositor.

I tried the new version from the AUR a few months ago, but had problems with it, so I switched back to the one in the repos.
But some new package this week have broken compiz again (possibly the /usr/bin merge)

@oliva: have you tried to clone the git repos [1], and search within? I'm unable to do so now but will try tonight.

Re: Compiz 0.8.x missing

You need to grab PKGBUILDs, patches etc. like this:
https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit … e781cb6f55
https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit … e781cb6f55
https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit … e781cb6f55
and do the same for emerald and whatnot.

Happy building / testing :-)

Re: Compiz 0.8.x missing

Downgrading anything diddn't help.
I'm doing my final exams, but if anyone's interested, I'll update this thread with whatever I can do about compiz 0.8.8 (or 0.8.9) within a month.
Until then I'll take the easy way with the preconfigured 0.9.10 in the AUR, with whatever stupid stuff it has.
What I remember was that using automatic plugin management put png and jpeg after wallpaper, and that vsync didn't work, which is the major problem in a compositing window manager.

Noob question, but uhm, how do I install compiz because it isn't there when I search for it using pacman.

For now install it from the AUR compiz-bzr package.
The easiest way is via yaourt, but that is left to you.

There was some discussion on the mailing list, too, because the old one wasn't dropped to AUR, but only away from the repos.

Usually when a package is not in the repos anymore, it has been dropped to the AUR, so it's a good idea to search there.
Sometimes a package has been deprecated, changed its name etc. - read the forum and the ML to find out the details.

Re: Compiz 0.8.x missing

I love Compiz. I don't care about the visual effects but I find the window management stuff a godsend. I was sad to see that it was removed from community. I tried the newer 0.9.x packages in AUR but none of them would build.

I've tracked down the 0.8.x builds, fixed them, and compiled them for both 32 & 64-bit arch.

Thank you. Why not upload the packages to the AUR? I had such plans, but no time now.

Oh man, a huge thank you from here. I too think that uploading these packages to AUR is a good idea. I'm sure the PKGBUILDS will have quite a lot more hits than in GitHub.

Thank you!. Once again big_smile

Re: Compiz 0.8.x missing

Hey. You guys are totally right. It would be much easier to share these packages using the AUR.

There are a few reasons I'm hesitant about uploading to AUR:

1) I don't plan to maintain these packages. I just want binaries that match exactly what was in community before they were removed, that I can keep around for a few years until a decent replacement comes along.

2) I'm not sure what best to do about the package names. There are already a bunch of similarly named packages so I don't think people would be very happy with me if I uploaded each package with the exact names they had when in community. I would be tempted to rename like emerald-0.8.8, ccsm-0.8.4 etc but that is in violation with the AUR rules.

3) If I do rename packages then there's going to be messing around with dependencies and I can foresee some people wanting to mix-n-match these packages with others in the AUR (esp the compiz 0.9.x) stuff and I don't want to have to deal with that headache.

4) I don't even trust the source code to stay online in future so, because I rely on this so much, I personally want a bunch of binaries I can access at any time and know they're safe, hence github.

That was my reasoning. What do you think?

I would be very happy, I can even upload them for you. (Mainly because I've caused the flood of "compiz missing" topics…)

I'm surprised you can host the binaries on github, recent policiy changed against binaries.
For naming in the AUR, I suggest compiz-0.8 simply.

Compiz 0.8.8-5, emerald & Co have just landed in the AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/compiz/ https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/emerald/
Still no idea why they weren't dropped there a long time ago.

They list "compiz-core" as a dependency (which doesn't exist). Should that be changed to one of these https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/?O=0&K=compiz-core ?

Re: Compiz 0.8.x missing

Both these packages are unmaintained, so you can pick them up and fix / update them - or at least post this info in the comments on their AUR page.
