Humble Bundle 8

Hey everyone! Hot off the presses, HIB8 just dropped, it looks like Dear Esther is a WINE-derived version from Codeweavers for now, but a native version is on its way. I'm deeply interested in Proteus and Dear Esther, and as soon as I get a computer capable of running them again (should be at the beginning of June), I'll be installing them ASAP.

It doesn't look like there are PKGBUILDs available for either on the AUR yet, so I'll be putting them together shortly if no one beats me to it. If someone does, post it up smile

Hop to it folks, this one is another awesome grab!

[Edit] Below is a list of PKGBUILDs for the games featured in this bundle so far:

All the best,

-HG

Re: Humble Bundle 8

I bought it and here’s my feedback on a Core i3 550 (Intel HD Graphics 1st gen).

- Proteus:

Only available in .bin and .deb packages. I got the .deb, unpacked it with "ar -x", unpacked the data.tar.gz inside, then launched ./Proteus.

The game opens a fullscreen window that blocks alt-tab (yesss some developers still think we live in the middle ages). If you launch the game (by clicking somewhere on the screen, not sure where) it will block everything for several minutes while it generates the level. I suggest first going to the options and setting “Fullscreen” to No and reducing the resolution and restarting the game. The options menu background is bugged but it doesn’t affect the menu itself.

The game (?) itself works, but the FPS are rather low on my computer. And I don’t think there is anything to be done on this island.

- Awesomenauts
- Capsized

Only available as .bin files, so I’m not installing them. Don’t like those crappy installers you have no idea what they will do, and they usually do it badly based on my experience with previous humble bundle games.

- Dear Esther:

32 bit .rpm or 64 bit .deb… go figure. I unpacked the .deb but can’t find a way to start the game. It seems that it’s a crossover “bottle”.

- Thomas was alone:

.tar. Apparently made with Unity, so works mostly fine. Needs a chmod +x. With default resolution and graphics settings, a bit jerky and a lot of tearing. Changing the resolution results in a black screen and I have to kill the game or blindly navigate the menu; however the window can be resized manually like any other window, and combined with setting the graphics to “simple” instead of “fantastic” it helped reduce the jerkyness and tearing issues.

Looks like it could be a fun game, but it starts a bit slowly.

- Little Inferno:

.deb, starts in fullscreen but does not disable alt-tab, works very well.

Seems that it was designed with tablets in mind and there’s no real gameplay; just buy stuff, wait, burn it, click on the coins and repeat. Kinda fun but tedious and pointless.

- Hotline Miami:

.tar.gz, couldn’t make it work past the launcher, it exits without any error message.

Re: Humble Bundle 8

Sweet. Good to know. I'm not sure I'm gonna deal with Dear Esther until it gets its native port.

Re: Humble Bundle 8

Thomas was Alone and Awesomenauts ran out of the box pretty easily (though Awesomenauts is almost useless without steam). I had a small mouse cursor issue in the Awesomenauts menu with the downloaded version, but the steam one did not have that issue, not sure why.

The only other I've tried so far is Hotline Miami but unfortunately I keep getting a segfault and not entirely sure why yet (could be a bad archive but can't test that until later).

Using an AMD Phenom X3 and AMD 5650m with latest official drivers.

Re: Humble Bundle 8

Also had no luck with Hotline Miami, and even less luck with Proteus (crashed with a System.TypeLoadException, seems to include it's own MonoGame). Going to give Awesomenauts and Capsized a try.

Re: Humble Bundle 8

Created an AUR package for Thomas Was Alone. (There doesn't seem to be a program icon to install though; suggestions are appreciated...)

Re: Humble Bundle 8

Neither Hotline Miami on Steam or the Humble Indie Bundle package worked for me. Installed libglu-git and lib32-libglu-git but I still get segmentation fault.

Re: Humble Bundle 8

Well it looks like we aren't alone on the Hotline Miami issues: link

I'm guessing a broken build, as it looks like people were able to get it working before. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

Re: Humble Bundle 8

I was getting segfaults with Thomas was Alone, but it turns out I did not have 32bit Direct Rendering, I needed to uninstall lib32-mesa-libgl and replace it with lib32-nvidia-libgl. (as a result of switching between nouveau & nvidia drivers)

Re: Humble Bundle 8

Is there a way to specify keys in Thomas was alone?
I'm stuck with the esc key; supposed to bring the game to the main menu, but it just quit the whole game.
In the preferences screen it says the key is "(Locked)" (?!)

-EDIT
I've had to modify the preference file ~/.config/unity3d/Mike\ Bithell/Thomas\ Was\ Alone/prefs
and change the default value into this:

<pref name="inputPause" type="string"><![CDATA[P]]></pref>

...Not only that, i've had to chattr +i it, or elase it would overwritten at game starts, and the same applied for the wrong resolution.

...Are they serious? This time it spent 1 euro; will get back to them "IF" they fix all of that issues.

Re: Humble Bundle 8

@kokoko3k
It works fine for me out of the box (having the game installed via my AUR package)...
Pressing ESC pauses the game and opens a menu on the right screen side, which has several options including "Return to main screen".

Re: Humble Bundle 8

Now that's a statement: http://support.humblebundle.com/custome … nux-issues

I'm glad that they are aware, that WINE!=native and that they explained, why we get to play the WINE version, even though the source engine is ported to Linux.

Re: Humble Bundle 8

In related news, they have finally released an updated Linux version for Torchlight (from Humble Bundle 6) that fixes the long-standing and annoying "invisible character faces" bug. Better late than never! big_smile
(You can install it using torchlight-hib if you don't like the idea of running the self-extracting installer).

I really wish they would post up and put TL1 on Steam for Linux; that would be great, but I'm glad the bug was squashed. Also, if they ever add Linux support for TL2, I'll be all over that.

Installed the open source driver xf86-video-ati instead of catalyst and hotlinemiami works now. aur package https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/hotlinemiami/vote/

Symlinked the SaveData.sav in My Documents to .local/share/HotlineMiami/SaveData.sav and all my progress is back!

Re: Humble Bundle 8

hmm, your capsized PKGBUILD doesn’t work on my 64 bit system. steam version works fine though (except the achievements) – i suspect it might be due to it being 32 bit.

————————————————

for hotline miami, both the PKGBUILD and and steam version have the same problem: clicking my mouse doesn’t do anything once i’m in the game. steamcommunity discussion

Re: Humble Bundle 8

Can't wait til Dear Esther gets native support, I was so confused when I downloaded it via Steam and it told me it was incompatible with my system tongue

In any case... Thomas Was Alone is an amazing game.

capsized-05272013-bin includes both 32bit and 64bit versions, the PKGBUILD should install the correct one for your system.
What exactly isn't working?

$ cd /opt/Capsized && ./NePlusUltra.bin.x86_64
Corlib not in sync with this runtime: expected corlib version 110, found 96.
Loaded from: /opt/Capsized/mscorlib.dll
Download a newer corlib or a newer runtime at http://www.go-mono.com/daily.

i just checked and amazingly with the steam version, it works even in x64!

@flying sheep
Try it with the newest version of the PKGBUILD, unless I'm mistaken I fixed that bug yesterday already (see the AUR comments for more info).

Re: Humble Bundle 8

For what it's worth, hotline miami launches when I deactivate the vertical sync.
Config: Arch 64bits, Radeon HD 5770 with ati (open-source) driver

Also, if you see the following (warning?) messages:

libGL error: failed to load driver: r600
libGL error: Try again with LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose for more details.

check that the (lib32-)ati-dri package is installed.
