Is there anyway to bring this back? Or put in a request? Ever since the big update (4.0... maybe 4.1, can't remember) it just saying "retreiving packages" where it used to say something like "retreiving packages [core]" then it downloaded everything from [core]; next line "retreiving packages [extra]" etc. I know it's minor and cosmetic only but I liked it.

Please read the man page for pacman.conf if you're not getting the output like the one above.

OK well I just turned on Verbose mode. It's definetely an improvement and shows everything I need. I especially like how it shows old version, new version, and size change per package... I didn't know this was possible. I hope you know what I was talking about though with the old Pacman. I had Verbose mode turned off and everything looked the same as the new version with Verbose off except it printed a single line when it changed repo. It would be like:
Retreiving Packages from [core]:
Package 1 (Progress Bar)
Package 2 (Progress Bar)
Retreiving Packages from [extra]:
Package 1 (Progress Bar)
Package 2 (Progress Bar)
No idea why they took it out with the update. Oh well, I'm just nitpicking at this point. That Verbose mode shows everything I need and I actually like it better so thanks for the tip ![]()

On a related note, why is this not enabled by default? Is it not preferable to let everyone know that such a feature exists and then let them turn it off if they don't like it, than to keep it hidden and hope they may find it someday?

It shouldn't be the default because not everyone would want it. And it is assumed that you would read the documentation and check the configuration files for such a central piece of software, which would inform you of such features.

A setting in pacman.conf can hardly be considered hidden...

And how much documentation does a commented settnig called VerbosePkgLists really need? The name of the setting is basically its own documentation. And it is also described in the pacman.conf man page. Hidden, really?
This may not be so much the case for ILoveCandy, but that's more just for kicks.
(edit: to fix ambiguity)

Oh, but it is also described in the pacman.conf man page.
Is it? I can't find any reference.
It still does work though.

Sorry, I edited and just appended the comment in a stream-of-consciousness style. The ILoveCandy point was just an aside, and the man page comment was referring back to VerbosePkgLists.
