[SOLVED] WOW crash w/ stable OC

Hi, I'm trying to run World of Warcraft under wine.
It opens and crash after some minutes of playing, this is my OC settings

BCLK 103.5MHz
Clock Ratio 44
GPU Clock 1500

The system is super stable and I don't haver problems with anything ,except with WOW, this is the output of the crash:

World of WarCraft (build 12340)

Exe:      Z:\home\axelectrik\.wineall\drive_c\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft.bak\Wow.exe
Time:     May 28, 2013  1:35:42.247 PM
User:     axelectrik
Computer: wonderland
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This application has encountered a critical error:

ERROR #132 (0x85100084) Fatal Exception
Program:    Z:\home\axelectrik\.wineall\drive_c\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft.bak\Wow.exe
Exception:    0xC0000096 (PRIV_INSTRUCTION) at 0023:01D2FB45

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Sometimes it also throws a "Memory could not be read at 0x000000"

If I set the frequency to 43 ratio it works good, but I won't sacrifice full-system performance only for WOW!

any ideas? thank u big_smile

Re: [SOLVED] WOW crash w/ stable OC

Get this and read stress.txt.

It can be CPU errors caused by fast clock and high temperature.

Recommend you verify that your overclock is indeed stable.  I suspect it is not.  There is more to stability testing than mprime...

Re: [SOLVED] WOW crash w/ stable OC

Apparently you were right, it is indeed not as stable as I thought, but the problem is only presented in WOW :S
Thank you both, what wold you recommend to improve cooling ?

Re: [SOLVED] WOW crash w/ stable OC

Don't assume the problem is with cooling... in my experience they instabilities are more often associated with low voltages to support the clockrate.  What are your max temps?  Did you try stress testing as outlined on the wiki I linked?  Under which conditions did it fail?

Re: [SOLVED] WOW crash w/ stable OC

TO be honest I'm new in this overclocking thing and I don't know much.
When I run mprime the max temps are around 103-105°
I tried using linpack but to be honest I didn't undestand much about it but still doesn't appear to be any problem
I increased the Vcore to +0.200 and mprime doesn't send me a kernel panic anymore but WOW is still giving problems :S
The error is pretty much the same, an error at an instruction in refered memory 0x??????? (random)
I'd be very pleased if you could help me with a good OC guide if you know one, all I've seen are manuals but they don't explain much.
Thanks

i hope that is in fahrenheit else you have a serious cooling issue
anyways since you also raised the BCLK you might have to raise the ram voltage/relax ram timings

nice guide for oc: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/sho … e-OC-Guide

Re: [SOLVED] WOW crash w/ stable OC

Wow, the_shiver just made me realize what these numbers in your first post really mean.

So you run at 4.5GHz on stock cooling at over 100°C and expect this to work? yikes

You are well above any "stable" temperature and actually in the "risk of permanent damage" zone. Don't increase Vcore until you get some better cooling, clock the CPU down instead.

And mprime isn't supposed to just "not give immediate kernel panic", it should be able to run for hours without a single computational error. Otherwise you are wasting your time trying to get anything to work reliably on this CPU.

Re: [SOLVED] WOW crash w/ stable OC

Its a bit OT but there are better ways to improve your performance in wow, for example using this[1] patch (works very well with this PKGBUILD[2]).

Re: [SOLVED] WOW crash w/ stable OC

Well the max temp are only reached during the stress test, using the system it never goes beyond 70° (it is mostly at 54°)
The VCore can't be changed so the system decides, normally is (1.100) if I try to put a higher value the system won't boot, but I can set the Dynamic Vcore to +0.250 and it works fine.
I also find weird that running WOW, the CPU freq are not all the time the highest, and the temperature doesn't go very high, maybe +10-15° so the temperature is not an issue, besides the system doesn't hang, only WOW crashes.
I'll try the patches Thaodan suggest, I tried with wine-rt but there's no difference, except that the thread goes back to normal priority after some time playing.
Thanks the_shiver for the OC guide, and everyone else for your comments wink

Re: [SOLVED] WOW crash w/ stable OC

[UPDATE]
The OC issue has been almost fixed, I downgraded the clock and the game worked fine
The patched wine, works almost amazingly great, the fps are never lowered, I never thought d3d could work faster than opengl (also looks better)
BUT it sometimes hangs the whole system without a message [°n°], suddenly the game hangs and I can't switch from X (since I play in a 2nd X) and I need to restart
I'm not sure, but I think this problem is not presented if I constantly switch between X's
The problem can't be the OC since the temps are normal when playing (max 77° but most of the time 55°)
Also a really weird fact, this issue only happens when I play with a high-level character :S

Re: [SOLVED] WOW crash w/ stable OC

don't assume your OC is stable just because the temperatures look ok
did you run a stresstest for an extended period of time? did you run a stresstest for your gfx card? eg. http://www.geeks3d.com/20121113/gputest … /#download
and just to be sure does WoW ever crash at stock settings?

Re: [SOLVED] WOW crash w/ stable OC

The problem is not the OC because I have used this configuration before with no problem, so it must be a wine issue, I'll try to test with the PC without OC but it'll take time, since this issue sometimes happens and sometimes it doesn't, also I'll try with winedg saving a log.
The stress test was fine, I left it all morning with no problems wink
