how to use IBus for chinese

I am reading this article : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IBus

But it does not seem to explain how to actually use IBus. How can I start it and use it?

I already installed ibus and ibus-pinyin. I tried the command ibus-daemon, but it doesn't work.

Re: how to use IBus for chinese

Hi Gradient,

Try running 'ibus-setup'. That should help create a configuration and launch the daemon.

Re: how to use IBus for chinese

I ran ibus-setup, but I don't know what to do then. There are no input methods in the Input Method tab.

Re: how to use IBus for chinese

Gradient, I know you haven't asked for this, but I just wanted to share my experience: I've used IBUS, SCIM etc., mostly changing from one to the next if there was some major hassle (especially after large updates). I've given up on IBUS quite some time ago and the input method I'm using right now is called Fcitx and I'm using it both for Japanese and Chinese input. So if you can't get IBUS to work I'd recommend to give Fcitx a try.

Re: how to use IBus for chinese

Gradient, which input method do you want to use? If you do "pacman -Ss ibus " you will see a list of some methods you can install support for.

I've also heard good things about Fcitx, and played around with it briefly, but what I was looking for (pinyin input), ibus was the best fit. It probably depends on what kinds of input methods you are looking for.

Cheers,
Keith

Re: how to use IBus for chinese

I installed ibus-pinyin and ibus-rime packages, but nothing appears in the Input Method tab when I do ibus-setup.

Re: how to use IBus for chinese

You might need to restart the daemon to see the new input methods. Once you have done that, in the 'input method' tab, at the very top, there should be a select box with some options for different languages. Go to Chinese and you should see pinyin, etc. there.

Any luck?

Re: how to use IBus for chinese

I was able to install and use pinyin :
ibus-setup > Input Method > Select an input method > Other > Pinyin

I still have a last question : where can I find information on how to use IBus? The wiki is not helpful on this.

PS : ibus-pinyin writes in double pinyin. ibus-libpinyin should be installed instead.

Re: how to use IBus for chinese

Not really sure what the best place is, but you might try starting with the manpage for ibus and also https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IBus.

Re: how to use IBus for chinese

There are no manpages for IBus, but I was able to find this : http://man.devl.cz/deb/i/ibus

Thank you. It seems to be working now.
