[SOLVED] Wake on lid broken after update

I recently did  a full upgrade of my system by "pacman -Syu". Everything seemd to play nicely until I tried suspend-to-disk and suspend-to-ram. After the upgrade the system does not resume by operating the laptop lid switch, I have to press the power button. Before the upgrade it worked flawlessly. It does work when I close the lid, then the system suspends to ram as intended.

System setup:

Sony Vaio VPZ13. Intel Core i5 M460, 4GB ram.

I'm not using any power manager at the moment, no pm-utils or laptop mode tools. I let systemd take care of lid switch events, hibernate keys etc. Also, I'm not using any special desktop environment, just Slim, X and Openbox. However the problem persists event if I don't bring up any graphical environment at all. I'm actually fumbling in the dark here since I'm not sure what packages affect this functionality, but to my knowledge I'm only using core stuff like the kernel, systemd and the sony_laptop module. The sony_laptop module does not seem to have been upgraded though.

Snippet from pacman during the upgrade with the packages that may be involved

...
[2013-05-26 12:38] [PACMAN] upgraded util-linux (2.22.2-2 -> 2.23-2)

[2013-05-26 12:39] [PACMAN] upgraded linux (3.8.10-1 -> 3.9.3-1)
...

I have since then done another upgrade (snippet as well)

[2013-06-07 07:56] [PACMAN] upgraded linux-firmware (20130430-1 -> 20130528-1)
[2013-06-07 07:56] [PACMAN] upgraded linux (3.9.3-1 -> 3.9.4-1)

But the problem still persists.

My /etc/systemd/logind.conf looks like

[Login]
#NAutoVTs=6
#ReserveVT=6
#KillUserProcesses=no
#KillOnlyUsers=
#KillExcludeUsers=root
#Controllers=

#SuspendKeyIgnoreInhibited=no
#HibernateKeyIgnoreInhibited=no
#LidSwitchIgnoreInhibited=no
LidSwitchIgnoreInhibited=yes
#IdleAction=ignore
#IdleActionSec=30min

This was not changed during the upgrade.

Any ideas appreciated.

Re: [SOLVED] Wake on lid broken after update

Kernel updates can effect everything.  So have you tried downgrading anything to see if you can narrow down the offending package?  It would seem that just continually upgrading is going to muddy the waters even more.  Also, your update in which you said sh*t went awry, you moved from 3.8.* to 3.9.*.  That is not insignificant.

Re: [SOLVED] Wake on lid broken after update

Thanks for your fast reply WonderWoofy. So I have followed your advice and started to downgrade package by package, starting with the kernel. It is a bit tedious since I actually reboot between each downgrade. Unfortunatly I have had no luck so far.

I will continue trying to downgrade relevant packages, but I have no more obvious picks. I provide the complete upgrade log in case anyone knows a package in the list that I should try. Any hints are appreciated.

Re: [SOLVED] Wake on lid broken after update

How far back did you downgrade you kernel?  I think that would likely be what caused this... though I guess since systemd now contains udev, that might also be something that could be of consequence as well...

Re: [SOLVED] Wake on lid broken after update

Doh! Now I feel sheepish. It seems like Windows has been playing some tricks on me. I have a dual boot system set up, and I booted into Windows just to check that suspend was working there. As it turned out Windows was in the middle of some upgrade, because when I started I got the usual message about "Windows is installing 'blah blah blah' please don't turn of your computer...". When the system finally came up suspend did not work in there either, and also the screen resolution was wrong. But since it was after an upgrade I just rebooted into Windows again and lo and behold suspend was working. So I rebooted into Arch and suspend was working there as well :-o

Now I have upgraded all the packages I downgraded earlier, and it is still working :-D

My best guess is that the halfway Windows upgrade somehow blocked the suspend functionality. I didn't know that was possible. But what can I say, you learn something new everyday.

Thanks for your tips and time WonderWoofy.

Re: [SOLVED] Wake on lid broken after update

Windows is the most inconsiderate operating system when it comes to coexisting with others.  I think that M$ cannot even fathom why someone might want to use something else on their computer besides just their software.  In any case, I find it appalling that windows is able to f*ck up your hardware... as no software should be able to do that.

Glad you got it working though.
