[SOLVED] Question on kde/gnome not depending on/requiring xorg

Just noticed this again after laughing at a friend for not installing xorg with gnome: why isn't the xorg package a dependency for DEs?

Re: [SOLVED] Question on kde/gnome not depending on/requiring xorg

Because you don't necessarily need all of xorg, nor do you specifically need xorg-server to run an environment.  For example, one can use xvnc to run a gui from a remote machine.  Arch Linux doesn't tell you what you have to have if there is any kind of choice.  At best, it might be considered an optional dependency, but it is certainly not a hard dependency.
