I'm setting up a new system, and I tried following the instructions at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vi … nux_guests.
Using "sudo pacman -S virtualbox-guest-utils" gives me an error message:
depmod: ERROR: could not open directory /lib/modules/3.9.4-1-ARCH: No such file or directory
depmod: FATAL: could not search modules: No such file or directory"
I see I do have a 3.9.5-1-ARCH directory, though.
I assume something somewhere needs to be updated. Is there anything I can do until that happens?

Reboot?

Did you update the kernel but not reboot yet?

I just created a new system (from the instruction at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners'_Guide).
I also just tried rebooting. Didn't make any difference.

what's the output of "uname -r"?

Wow, I just checked the install file, it's hardcoded to that version. Needs a bug report.

Thanks for taking a look. Could you let me know exactly which package?

virtualbox-guest-modules
It has been marked out of date, probably for the same reason. The maintainer usually takes care of things like this quickly.

I'm having the same problem. Installed today in a VirtualBox virtual machine...
(1/1) reinstalling virtualbox-guest-modules [############################] 100%
depmod: ERROR: could not open directory /lib/modules/3.9.4-1-ARCH: No such file or directory
depmod: FATAL: could not search modules: No such file or directory
error: command failed to execute correctly
The virtualbox-guest-modules package is marked out of date since 2013-06-09. Let's hope this will be fixed soon.

Try running "depmod 3.9.5-1-ARCH" at the command line. (The package right now is running "depmod 3.9.4-1-ARCH", which is causing the problem.)

Thx! The depmod command did complete.
However, I still had a black screen when starting GDM. In addition to the screen being mostly black it had some colorful fringes on top.
KDM works though. So I think it must be a problem with GDM's graphics mode...

I think I have a similar problem
Im using Arch as the host and trying to use other OSs as guests in virtualbox.
But when I try to use virtualbox and push start (on XP) it say:
"The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded
or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please
reinstall the kernel module by executing'pacman -S virtualbox-host-modules'
as root. If you don't use our stock kernel, install
virtualbox-host-source and execute dkms autoinstall."
when I execute: # pacman -S virtualbox-host-modules it say:
(1/1) reinstalling virtualbox-host-modules
depmod: ERROR: could not open directory /lib/modules/3.9.4-1-ARCH: No such file or directory
depmod: FATAL: could not search modules: No such file or directory
In order to use the new version, reload all virtualbox modules manually.
I tryied to execute "depmod 3.9.5-1-ARCH" but in my case it didnt help,
I also running on 3.9.5-1-ARCH.
So basicly there is nothing to do now, but waiting for bug to be fixed?
You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen.
Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet, still and solitary.
The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.

@Yashka: the depmod (see earlier posts) command is probably sufficient.
You also can fix the package yourself. Get the PKGBUILD and the other needed files from abs (If you use yaourt you can use "yaourt -G virtualbox-host-modules"), edit the *.install files to use the correct kernel version and build with makepkg.

package has already been fixed in the -7 version.

How long does it take before the package is added to the pacman package list?
I've tried pacman -Syu and pacman -Syy to try to force the package list to include the updated package but no dice...
So how long am I likely to have to wait?

Depends completely on your mirror. If yours isn't updated, try a more up to date one: https://www.archlinux.org/mirrors/status/
