VMware vmplayer aborts on startup

Hello everyone,

Today I attempted installing vmplayer following the instructions at: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VM … stallation.
Basically I installed using the installer, then installed vmware-patch from the AUR, used it and created the symlinks in /sbin (ln -s /usr/bin/insmod /usr/bin/lsmod /usr/bin/modinfo /usr/bin/rmmod /sbin/).

When trying to start vmplayer it gives me this:

[darius@darius-laptop ~]$ vmplayer
Logging to /tmp/vmware-darius/vmware-modconfig-18761.log
filename: /lib/modules/3.9.2-1-ARCH/misc/vmmon.ko
supported: external
license: GPL v2
description: VMware Virtual Machine Monitor.
author: VMware, Inc.
depends:
vermagic: 3.9.2-1-ARCH SMP preempt mod_unload modversions 686
Aborted (core dumped)

The log says:

[darius@darius-laptop ~]$ cat /tmp/vmware-darius/vmware-modconfig-18761.log

Re: VMware vmplayer aborts on startup

I can confirm this behavior (VMware Workstation 9.0.2 & Player 5.0.2). Was working well until a recent update of gtk2 stuff I guess!
I tried to get a stack trace from gdb but no luck so far...

Re: VMware vmplayer aborts on startup

Hello,

I confirm the same behavior. Note that i installed VMWare Workstation 9.0.2 because i had issues with Workstation 8 this morning, it couldn't compile vmci after the kernel upgrade to 3.9.2.

Thanks for your help!

Same here VMWare Workstation 9.0.2 gui does not run.

I have rolled back the recently updated gtk2/3 apps but VMWare GUI still doesn't run

It appears that the vmware services are running:

The kernel modules of Workstation 9.0.2 compiles and loads just fine with linux 3.9.2 on my machine!
I still suspect we have some high level library issue (gtk2, glib, etc...)

Proof: When you remove your gtkmm package VMware will load its own outdated version and you'll get some ugly looking gui running smile

Re: VMware vmplayer aborts on startup

Right! The downgrade to gtkmm-2.24.2-2 solved this problem to me, too.

I still remember a similar problem crashing weeks ago due to a new release of "curl" package. The solution was the "curl" package downgrade.

Thanks to everyone finding out the solution.

Re: VMware vmplayer aborts on startup

Quick and dirty workaround to fully update your system

sudo pacman -Suy #update everything

sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/lib/gtkmm && cd /usr/local/lib/gtkmm

sudo wget http://arm.konnichi.com/2013/01/05/extra/os/x86_64/gtkmm-2.24.2-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
#sudo wget http://arm.konnichi.com/2013/01/05/extra/os/i686/gtkmm-2.24.2-2-i686.pkg.tar.xz #The bug affects i686 too.

sudo tar -xvf ./gtkmm-2.24.2-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
#sudo tar -xvf ./gtkmm-2.24.2-2-i686.pkg.tar.xz #The bug affects i686 too.

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib/gtkmm/usr/lib/ vmplayer #start it with old libraries

That was quick! Downgrading gtkmm did the trick, thanks for your help. Should this be reported as a bug somewhere?

Re: VMware vmplayer aborts on startup

Here is the Arch bug report: https://bugs.archlinux.org/?project=1&c … ring=gtkmm

Besides you could report to gtkmm upstream and/or to VMware.
I don't even know whether VMware is wrongly using the API or the gtkmm devs introduced a new bug in their latest release.

I've had crashes with another application compiled from aur with the latest gtkmm and that app never crashed before. (guitarix-git).
It even seems that some apps refuses to build with that lib version.

Re: VMware vmplayer aborts on startup

It is definitely broken and can also confirm this, on VMware Vsphere Web Remote console plugin. Although the web gui works (with noticable unresponsivness) the launch console is broken, it just hangs saying connection and then popups the Error regarding NPObject. When gtkmm is downgraded, everything works.

Re: VMware vmplayer aborts on startup

It is fixed since some weeks by the gtkmm update, you don't need to downgrade anymore, i think.
It is not a vmware issue.
