Re: System unable to boot after kernel upgrade - mkinitcpio fails

Hi, I probably have an point on that. If what falconindy wrote is true, I probably wouldn't be able to downgrade my kernel version.

I guess that the way mkinitcpio and modinfo look for modules are the same, independent from the kernel versions. So my best guess
is that something should not be right with the file that describes how the compilation of the kernel should proceed (Sorry, I do
not know the the name of this file).

Re: System unable to boot after kernel upgrade - mkinitcpio fails

Hi,

I hope I don't hijack this thread but I think I have exactly the same problem and don't want to create a new thread and get punished for that ^^.

I updated my system via pacman.. and yeah there were these errors but I didn't really realized. I rebooted and boom, cannot find the root device.

No I'm in my new "fallback" ubuntu installation and chrooted like here said(in another thread):

pineapple-biku wrote:

I had this problem, through a few other forum posts and some wiki articles I was able to solve it this way:

I booted into an arch installation CD and mounted my root partition under /mnt/arch.

I then used the wiki page on change root and ran the following commands:

cd /mnt/arch
mount -t proc proc proc/
mount -t sysfs sys sys/
mount -o bind /dev dev/

Now, my /boot is NOT a separate partition.  If yours is a separate partition I believe you must mount that separately.

I then issued the chroot command and configured my network:

chroot . /bin/bash
dhcpcd eth0

I'm not sure if all of these commands are required, but I didn't feel like continuously rebooting/chrooting, so I did them all at once and it fixed the issue we both were having:

pacman -Syy
pacman -Syu
pacman -S udev
pacman -S mkinitcpio
mkinitcpio -p linux
reboot

Remove the CD or USB drive and ta-da!  Now, I'll be honest and admit that I don't fully understand this fix, but I hope it helps.  Some of the posts also suggested doing a "pacman -S linux", however that was not necessary for me.

but yeah.. didn't work till the end.

Every time I want to install something with pacman or do a sysupdate it shows like this:

[root@ubuntu /]# pacman -S kmod
warning: kmod-13-2 is up to date -- reinstalling

Do anyone have an idea whats going on here? I'm totally wasted... :-/
(If I should open a new thread pls just tell me or maybe a mod could move it..)

Re: System unable to boot after kernel upgrade - mkinitcpio fails

# pacman-key --init

now perform random tasks until finish
then

# pacman-key --populate archlinux

yes sometimes I need to run this again
other option too is

#pacman-key --refresh-keys

but in teory a reintall of linux package trigger the mkinitcpio -p

Well, I suppose that this is somekind of signature, no?

If this was for me, it didn't work :-/

Re: System unable to boot after kernel upgrade - mkinitcpio fails

christian1337,

after changing root as you did, I did the following:

cd /var/cache/pacman/pkg
pacman -U ./linux-3.9.5-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

and it solved the problem.

Re: System unable to boot after kernel upgrade - mkinitcpio fails

thanks for your answer.
doesn't work yet. is it a problem that I am in an ubuntu system and chrooted from there?

I still get these errors:

Re: System unable to boot after kernel upgrade - mkinitcpio fails

Ok, I want to go back to our 3.9.5-1-ARCH kernel problem. Today I got some time and did an reinstallation of kmod (as suggested on this thread) and than I tried to upgrade de kernel from 3.9.4-1-ARCH to 3.9.5-1-ARCH. As far as I could see compilation went through with only two minor modules errors, which could not find. I don't think they result in an no bootable system. (I don't remember which one where but they certainly where not the vfat modules, see next paragraph)

After restart everything went well but the the system could not mount my vfat partition, where the kernels are located (I have an UEFI MOBO). I tried to mount it manually, but mount said that it did not recognize the partition, so it couldn't mount it. I checked the 3.9.5-1 package and inside I found the vfat module in the /usr/lib/modules/3.9.5-1-ARCH/kernel/fs/ directory inside the installation pckg. Any suggestion how I can check which module is being builded into the kernel during (re)compilation? I need it in order for my EFI boot partition to mount.

I also saw that 3.9.5 has been already flagged out. Is there any problem in upgrading directly from 3.9.4-1 to 3.9.6-1?

Re: System unable to boot after kernel upgrade - mkinitcpio fails

@christian1337,
Tell pacman to delete File /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kmod-13-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz and try to reinstall kmod again. If the package is deleted from cache, it will force pacman to download a new (and hopefully uncorrupted) copy.

CLI Paste | How To Ask Questions

Arch Linux | x86_64 | GPT | EFI boot | refind | stub loader | systemd | LVM2 on LUKS

thank you soooo much, this worked. system is up and running again. but still I have two questions:
1. to understand better what went wrong and to could help other and me next time, what was the problem? this time I really don't understand whats went wrong.. or what I did wrong.

2. all the gnome settings are gone, and also when I'm having my german keybord layout chosen, it is the english one when I'm typing. I'm confused why this is so after all?
the font settings are mixed up(or maybe in default settings) and also the window stile of for example nautilus is totally ugly and I think not even default..
Did I something wrong? how do I set the settings back to how they where before the crash?

but still, big thanks to you and all the others smile

Edit: Ok I've rebooted again and the gnome style font thingies are gone smile).

but still#2.. the booting process isn't the same as before.. there isn't shown the normal "status-whats-loaded-and-started"-stuff before you login. At first boot after repairing it was:

http://i.imgur.com/K0XmKSD.jpg
=> and it holds there several seconds before I could log me in.

and after the reboot:
http://i.imgur.com/mWy2g26.jpg
=> here it holds also, and I think longer..

maybe you know at first sight whats wrong here, otherwise I maybe look at some logs or something.. but not today anymore.
