What kind of memory do I have

Hello, I've been trying to figure out what kind of RAM do I have in a computer (because I'm not sure if it's DDR2 or DDR1), so that when I purchase an upgrade, i will be able to use it.
I tried:

lspci | grep -i ram
00:00.0 RAM memory: NVIDIA Corporation MCP55 Memory Controller (rev a1)
00:01.2 RAM memory: NVIDIA Corporation MCP55 Memory Controller (rev a2)
00:18.2 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] DRAM Controller

sudo dmidecode --type 17 :(

+: Is it true that if 1 RAM is only 400MHz, and another one in the same PC with 800MHz, both only will only use 400MHz?

Re: What kind of memory do I have

You could try lshw -short -C memory , dmidecode --type memory (this one gives a bit more info than --type 17), and dmidecode --type 2 (reports mobo model).  But I wouldn't be surprised if these don't give you anything either.

You may just have to bite the bullet and crack open the case.

Re: What kind of memory do I have

Go to crucial.com and look up your machine to see what kind of memory it supports. With an Athlon K8 it is very unlikely you have DDR1.

Re: What kind of memory do I have

dmidecode should be able to tell you the manufacturer/product number of your mainboard => check the manufacturers website what ram it supports

I can open the case, there is no problem with that (though most times it's not specified on the label)

From your commands I can't figure out what kind it is (though I know it's DDR2)

Re: What kind of memory do I have

533 MHz means DDR2 PC2-4200.

I've seen PC2-6400, 800 MHz, and that is DDR2 as well.
How did you know?

Re: What kind of memory do I have

Didn't know, googled "533 MHz".

Re: What kind of memory do I have

Might be overclocked memory. Best way to be sure is to open the machine and check what it says on the stickers.

Re: What kind of memory do I have

I'm surprised no one mentioned this but you can also just reboot into your BIOS (by holding DEL during the boot) and get your memory info from there.
