Compaq 610 wireless problem (Broadcom 14e4:4315)

I can't get the wireless working, well I can get it up, but it doesn't see any networks. I tried the b43, which should work according to the link on the wiki page and it does work with b43 on the Manjaro livecd. Nice distro btw for the point and clickers, slick and fast. can be a big one when matured. Beats the hell out of *buntu distros in speed. But I am more a keyboard guy. And I want to make the software selection myself. For me just plain Arch. Back to the topic now.
I also tried the fallback, broadcom-wl, which works great on the Archbang live cd. I can't get it working in Arch.

I installed Arch several years ago on a Samsung netbook, when it died I moved the hd into an old Sony Vaio and that laptop died to, so I moved the drive into this Compaq 610. So maybe I inherited some messed up settings from that. I don't know. But I want to fix this installation. It has worked for a while. A couple of days. But I can't remember what I did exactly when it stopped working. After an update or after installing/removing packages. Anyway... now it's not working anymore. And tethering via my phone is not comfortable.

The result from wifi-menu: no networks found.

Where can I look for a problem? I didn't see anything weird in the output from lsmod and systemctl. There is also no mentioning that the card isn't detected or not working properly in the command I try. It just doesn't see other networks. Is there any logfile somewhere where I could find a hint of what is wrong?

Is this a known problem that is just the result of a bug in the bleeding edge version of some package? Like the kernelbug that prevents the laptop from shutting down on hp laptops (Compaq is just hp). That one is solved already and will be in the next kernel version. But I haven't found anything about my wireless card the BCM4312.

Can anybody give me a hint where to look to find the cause of this problem? I get no error messages, so I don't know where to look.

Re: Compaq 610 wireless problem (Broadcom 14e4:4315)

Some users seem to have success by using an AUR firmware for it: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 6#p1278306
(you might want to search the forum with your pci-id for more relevant hits)

Thanks, but I already tried that without success.

Same Broadcom 4312 here and working fine with b43-firmware from AUR.Reboot after install.

Yes, I'm sure it can work fine, but for me it doesn't. Something is preventing that and I don't know what is is and where to find it. Removed the firmware, rebooted, installed it again, rebooted.. still didn't work. Wlan0 was down, sudo ip set wlan0 up gave a message for the first time. RF-kill prevented activating wlan0. Then rmmod rfkill. Now I could activate it, everything seemed fine, but still no networks to see.

I could choose for a clean install, that will probably solve it, but that shouldn't be neccessary. And I just want to know what's wrong with my configuration. Eager to learn. Until I solved this I just keep tethering on my phone. I want to know.

I don't mind figuring out what's wrong, but right now I'm stuck. Just need some hints to proceed. Didn't find anything on the wiki. I always try to find the solution myself and most of the times the wiki has the answer. Or google, but most of the times google sends me to Arch Wiki. smile

Of course the solution can be on the wiki, I don't know all the wiki, but it's not on the wireless or the broadcom page and some other pages I read.

rmmod-ing rfkill isn't how you unkill a device. You unkill it by... unkilling it. Using the rfkill utility.

Sorry, that was  nonsense. I tried a lot and didn't look into my terminal history... anyway rfkill doesn't seem to be the problem.

$ rfkill

0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no
1: hp-gps: GPS
	Soft blocked: yes
	Hard blocked: yes
2: phy0: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no

Most of the times when I do 'sudo ip link set wlan0 up' or 'sudo ifconfig wlan0 up' no nothing is returned to the terminal but with dmesg the following error can be found

IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready

But not always. Sometimes it goes just up as intended. For a while... until I think that I can use it to make a connection. Nothing to standard output but dmesg reveals:

wlan0: deauthenticating from 01:23:45:67:89:ab by local choice (reason=3)

Well... I didn't make the choice, but it seems something did. An kernel module or service?

LOAD = Reflects whether the unit definition was properly loaded.
ACTIVE = The high-level unit activation state, i.e. generalization of SUB.
SUB = The low-level unit activation state, values depend on unit type.

175 loaded units listed.
To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.

But what is the source of the problem? And how do I find it. Is there a way to to find out which service/module/program/whatever is preventing my wifi from working and shuts it down as soon as it's seem to work for a few2 seconds?

Re: Compaq 610 wireless problem (Broadcom 14e4:4315)

If it connects, but deauthenticates sometimes that comes from troubles with powersave kicking in. Maybe check on that. Also worth a try is disabling hardware encryption

modprobe b43 nohwcrypt=1

edit: btw, the dmesg error you quote above is for IPv6 only

Re: Compaq 610 wireless problem (Broadcom 14e4:4315)

It has been a while, because I had other priorities and gave up to solve it for a while. It was not blocking because I could use my phone as usb wifi adapter. But now I really need the better wifi in my laptop. It has a far better reception then my phone.So I tried again. The situation is like this.

rfkill list all
0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: yes
	Hard blocked: no
1: hp-gps: GPS
	Soft blocked: yes
	Hard blocked: yes
2: phy0: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no

I have to

rfkill unblock 0
ip link set wlan0 up

But when I start wifi-menu it finds no networks, and wlan0 is down again. Sometimes. I iplinksetwlan0up again and start wifi-menu. When I'm fast enough I can connect. And then it it stays connected. Yay! So my wifi card and firmware works, but why this behaviour?

Yes. that could be, but I'm not running on the battery, so the powersave should be off, but iwconfig shows it's initially on. This is my config.
(BTW I also discabled hardware encryption as you said, maybe it helped me to get connected now...)

% cat /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/wireless-power.conf
#
# Configuration file for Laptop Mode Tools module wireless-power.
#
# For more information, consult the laptop-mode.conf(8) manual page.
#

###############################################################################
# Generic wireless power saving mode settings
# -------------------------------------------
#
# If you enable this setting, laptop mode tools will automatically set the
# power saving mode of wireless interfaces which support power saving using
# the iwconfig power on/off setting.
#
###############################################################################

# Enable debug mode for this module
# Set to 1 if you want to debug this module
DEBUG=0

# Control generic wireless interface power saving mode?
CONTROL_WIRELESS_POWER_SAVING="auto"

WIRELESS_AC_POWER_SAVING=0
WIRELESS_BATT_POWER_SAVING=1

And even if I was on battery, why shutting wifi down seconds after I brought it up!?

So I've two remaining questions to make it work as I think it should:
- How can I get more than a few seconds to connect before powersave shuts the wifi down? Is there a 'PATIENCE' setting?
- And when I'm on power I do want wlan default up. And powersave should not kick in, like the config shows. Why doesn't it work?
