Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

I think you should add xorg-xrdb as dependency of freetype2-infinality-utilmate. Not everyone may have it installed.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

You're right: it's infinality specific dependency, not needed by the stock package. Thank you for the tip, 2.4.12 will come with enhanced dependency array.

Here's 3 more small freetype patches from upstream git, to fix minor issues.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Could it be possible fonts might look different on KDE and Gnome? I find fonts with infinality rendering on Gnome looks smoother than on KDE.

Yeah. I don't use enough qt4 apps to care much, just vym and skype.

Some ./configure options to try with qt4:

-freetype -system-freetype -fontconfig -gtkstyle

But, I think it's a lost cause - I never hear of success stories of qt4 using freetype and fontconfig properly.

This seems to occur occasionally. Generally back up within 30 mins, so try again later.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Most of all Advanced >> Desktop Effects and set scale method to Crisp has helped me get smoother fonts. Infinality would still look not as smooth as I want. But both freetype2 and freetype2-ubuntu works well. That's nice and working.

Ha ha. It's only Infinality that provides the INFINALITY_FT_FILTER_PARAMS tweakable. So tweak it!

Currently I'm liking:

export INFINALITY_FT_FILTER_PARAMS="13 20 32 20 13"

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Today I received the following message from byethost.com:

Unfortunately due to a ddos attack we are not able to continue hosting your site / content.

No further explanation, no more information. This means that unless I find another free hosting, the only place to get the binaries from remains Dropbox.

Edit

I have temporarily set up a new account and as far as I can tell the repository is working again. The domain name remains the same, so you don't need to change anything in your pacman.conf.

Frankly speaking, I have no idea what to think about this. I monitor my accounts, check quota and bandwidth and this particular project was probably the least demanding. The number of connections must have been pretty high, though: I received several offers to go premium due to the 'popularity of the content', but for pretty trivial reasons I couldn't afford this… Anyway, I hope the new provider is going to be more reliable and the incident is nothing but a nuisance no one should be blame for.

I'm going to push updated packages to the repository soon. I'm also thinking of packaging a couple of nice fonts. Besides, the updated and revamped documentation will be available on the server as well.

I'm sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

You may need to remove the infinality-bundle{-multilib}.db files manually from /var/lib/pacman/sync so that pacman can fetch them afresh.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

The multilib repository is not working for me, the other one is:

error: infinality-bundle-multilib.db appears to be truncated: 17312/0 bytes
error: failed to update infinality-bundle-multilib (failed to retrieve some files)

Databases have been removed prior to running this, as you suggested.

Same here. I removed the sync databases but pacman still can't retrieve fresh ones:

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

I decided to sign the database file, too. This way when you add the repository or re-fetch the db file, this sort of message

error: failed retrieving file 'infinality-bundle-multilib.db.sig' from bohoomil.cu.cc : Maximum file size exceeded

won't be bothering you anymore. As a proof, you should find a new signature file in your /var/lib/pacman/sync.

And some fun stuff: I've added a new repository

[infinality-bundle-any]
Server = http://bohoomil.cu.cc/infinality-bundle-any

where I'm going to put nice font packages, not present in the official Arch repositories or the AUR. At the moment, you will find there only two excellent type faces, Merriweather and Merriweather Sans, both by Eben Sorkin. Maybe some of you will find them useful.

Thank you.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Wow, those first couple of fonts are really quite nice.  Thanks!

Also, I was having trouble with the repo fix as well.  But then I realized that not only does my computer run dnsmasq, which had a stale IP for your repo, but my router also runs dnsmasq (I use it for dhcp as well as DNS caching).  So to anyone who is having trouble with the new repo and you use a dns caching service, restart it (though I am not sure what the implications would be for pdnsd, since it is persistent).

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Thank you for mentioning this, WonderWoofy. I am not using any sort of DNS caching, so maybe that is why everything is working fine for me (I created several repos for testing purposes and pacman didn't have any problem using them). cecar, is it possible that WonderWoofy's remark may be your case, too?
