[solved]NIC which isnt crap?

Hello

I am tired of marvell and realtek, I find both chipsets to be utter crap, be driver- and hardwarewise, any suggestions about NICs that are really good and reliable and has a excellent driver builtinto the kernel?

EDIT: needs to support gigabit, and be pci-e 1x.

Re: [solved]NIC which isnt crap?

$ lspci
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: SysKonnect SK-9E21D 10/100/1000Base-T Adapter, Copper RJ-45 (rev 17)
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 Gigabit or Fast Ethernet (rev b0)
04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82574L Gigabit Network Connection

All of these work great in Arch. I think SysKonnect is defunct, and the Atheros is onboard. In any case Intel is always my first choice. Even dual-port gigabit NICs have gotten pretty cheap (I may be thinking of prices for used ones though).

Edit: Just noticed your edit. Go with the Intel® Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter.

Re: [solved]NIC which isnt crap?

+1 to Intel.
Though my current machines both have Realtek, which I find to be perfectly fine.  One is an r8169 in a file server, and in my laptop, the integrated ethernet is the r8168 that we discussed in the past when you were having trouble with it.  As long as I use the r8168 package, it works great.

Re: [solved]NIC which isnt crap?

Well I wouldn't exactly call it great, the network performance could have been better, I dont only use arch, and others distros often doesn't have that driver.

Re: [solved]NIC which isnt crap?

Well, I know that on many distributions, you can find a dkms package for r8168, whether in the offical repositories or elsewhere.  I have had to find it a couple of times, and always seemed to be able to find it.  I am not saying that it is the most amazing piece of hardware I have ever come across, or anythign like that.  But the times I have had to use it, it has been stable and consistent in its connectivity.  My internet is 50Mb/s (and was 25Mb/s), so with basic internet use, it is not like I am coming close to even knowing what its upper limits might be.  And transfers within the LAN I usually am doing when I am not wired to the router, so then I am facing the limitations of the wireless card anyway.

Anyway, I still stand by my +1'ing of Intel NICs.

Re: [solved]NIC which isnt crap?

IME, Intel and 3Com have always been the best. Since 3Com is gone, that just leaves Intel.
