boot newly installed system without grub

Is there a way to boot newly installed system 64bit without grub, for example from installation disk? I do not want to install grub just yet as I need the laptop for important work. I've tried an option "boot into existing installation" but even when I edited the command to hd 0 7 (sda7) it didn't boot. There is no problem with chroot though.
