[solved] Extra Thinkpad tablet hardware buttons not recognised

Hi there,

I am having a Thinkpad X200T which comes with additional tablet hardware buttons, such as for rotation.

However, these buttons are not recognised. I just checked it with 'xev'. They do not generate a click event.

Does anyone know how to enable these buttons?

All information I have found so far was on the ThinkWiki which says that you have to map these scancodes to keycodes. However, I am wondering if there is no other way to directly enable them, such as by a module to be loaded.

The buttons I am talking about are shown here: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/File:X41_ … uttons.JPG

Thanks!

You realize that you are asking about the thinkpad-acpi module which has a particularly good bit of information in the linux-docs package don't you?

You mean by loading the thinkpad-acpi module?

I already have done that. Sorry not to mention it. But the buttons are still not recognised.

No what I mean is that is the module that would potentially control those thing.  But it is a very well documented module, so you need to read the docs.  I'm not saying that it will do it, and I actually don't see why you don't just use the solution given to yu on the thinkwiki, but if the answer was going to be anywhere it is typically in the documentation... as always.

The solution on the ThinkWiki requires the use of setkeycodes and xbindkeys which I do not want to use as I am using Gnome with its own keyboard shortcut manager.

Does the GNOME shortcuts manager conflict with setkeycodes and xbindkeys?  Can it set the buttons you mention itself?  I just can't grasp your reasoning; you may as well say "I have to send a package from London to New York by tomorrow morning, but I don't want to use air freight because I favor the train system."  If your favored solution doesn't work (or doesn't even exist), then relying on it is foolish.  I can understand that you might want some kind of "Pure GNOME environment" solution, but there very well might not be one.

Thanks guys. I think I have misunderstood setkeycodes in the first place. I thought of it more as an extra bloated program but not as an integral system part.

As such I assigned the buttons to yet unused keycodes which I was able to find through:

# dumpkeys | grep ^keycode
