[solved] locale issue

I seem to be having an issue with locales.

I saw a problem when running pacmatic:

jason-laptop% sudo pacmatic -Syu
/usr/bin/pacmatic: line 6: warning: setlocale: LC_TIME: cannot change locale (en_US.utf8): No such file or directory

Googling around came up with this:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=116287

cat /etc/locale.gen

# Configuration file for locale-gen
#
# lists of locales that are to be generated by the locale-gen command.
#
# Each line is of the form:
#
#     <locale> <charset>
#
# where <locale> is one of the locales given in /usr/share/i18n/locales
# and <charset> is one of the character sets listed in /usr/share/i18n/charmaps
#
#  Examples:
#  en_US ISO-8859-1
#  en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
#  de_DE ISO-8859-1
#  de_DE@euro ISO-8859-15
#
# The locale-gen command will generate all the locales,
#  placing them in /usr/lib/locale.
#
# A list of supported locales is included in this file.
# Uncomment the ones you need.

This is a new install, I have no idea what is wrong. Just re-read the beginners guide, and redid the locale steps, still go the problem.

Re: [solved] locale issue

I have the same problem with srcpac and pacbuilder (my installation is 2 years old):

/usr/bin/bash: warning: setlocale: LC_ALL: cannot change locale (en_US.UTF-8)

My locale.conf:

LANG=en_GB.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE=C

locale:

LANG=en_GB.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE=C
LC_MONETARY="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

Re: [solved] locale issue

Whats weird is that I have two other arch installations which have identical locale.conf and locale.gen files and they have no issues.

*Edit,

Ok so on the laptop which has the locale issue, I made a new user, ran pacmatic and no problems. So its somthing with my user on my laptop by the looks of things

*Edit again,

I solved the issue by going to gnomes settings and then going to "Region & Language" and changing 'formats' to 'South Africa'.
I have no idea what file/setting this changes, I wish I had tested pacmatic when I wasn't using gnome, I now cannot change it back away from 'South Africa' to test.

Whats odd is that this was a new install, about 3 days old, with a brand new user 'jason' which had the locale issue. I just made a new user from gnome settings and there was no locale issue for that new user, so the gnome defaults worked for the new user, but not 'jason'

Re: [solved] locale issue

you have en_ZA (south africa) uncommented in your locale.gen, not en_US as you have set it. Try matching these.

ie. comment out en_ZA and uncomment en_US in locale.gen and generate the locales again.

you have en_ZA (south africa) uncommented in your locale.gen, not en_US as you have set it. Try matching these.

ie. comment out en_ZA and uncomment en_US in locale.gen and generate the locales again.

I havnt set en_US. I want en_Za.

Re: [solved] locale issue

Can you please outline the exact steps you took to set your locale, aside from modifying the files listed in your original post? You're clearly not using the locale that your config files would suggest.

Re: [solved] locale issue

ok Ill do everything:

while installing I did:
1) uncommented 'en_ZA.UTF-8 UTF-8' in /etc/locale.gen
2) ran

locale-gen

3) ran

echo LANG=en_ZA.UTF-8 > /etc/locale.conf
export LANG=en_ZA.UTF-8

4) ran

ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/Africa/Johannesburg /etc/localtime

All as per the beginners guide, usually from here I would have no problems at all.

So then I created a user with

useradd -m -g users -s /bin/bash jason

and installed X and gnome and drivers and what not. I do not do any gnome config of locale of regions or timezones. I dont even open the settings

then, while logged in as 'jason', pacmatic produces:

/usr/bin/pacmatic: line 6: warning: setlocale: LC_TIME: cannot change locale (en_US.utf8): No such file or directory

I then created a new user from the gnome 'Users' app in gnome-settings and I do not get

/usr/bin/pacmatic: line 6: warning: setlocale: LC_TIME: cannot change locale (en_US.utf8): No such file or directory

from pacmatic as that user

Re: [solved] locale issue

I "solved" this by replacing en_GB locale with en_US. Not ideal but since i need only LANG from en_US it makes no difference.

Re: [solved] locale issue

Still cant get it to work, after a reboot:

jason-laptop% locale
locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory
LANG=en_US.utf8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.utf8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.utf8"
LC_TIME="en_US.utf8"
LC_COLLATE="en_US.utf8"
LC_MONETARY="en_US.utf8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.utf8"
LC_PAPER="en_US.utf8"
LC_NAME="en_US.utf8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.utf8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.utf8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.utf8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.utf8"
LC_ALL=

I have no idea whats going on.
Why is everything not en_ZA.UTF-8 as I set in /etc/locale.conf and /etc/locale.gen

*Edit
Ok got some more info: I have 3 users: jason, asd, root
Booted into multi-user and ran 'locale' for each user, all produced:

LANG=en_ZA.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

then, booted up into gnome, logged in as 'asd' from gdm and:

jason-laptop% cat locale
LANG=en_ZA.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

logged in as 'jason' from gdm and:

jason-laptop% locale
locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory
LANG=en_US.utf8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.utf8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.utf8"
LC_TIME="en_US.utf8"
LC_COLLATE="en_US.utf8"
LC_MONETARY="en_US.utf8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.utf8"
LC_PAPER="en_US.utf8"
LC_NAME="en_US.utf8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.utf8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.utf8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.utf8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.utf8"
LC_ALL=

Before I tested this I ran

sudo rm -r /home/jason.*
sudo rm -r /home/asd.*

to get rid of any settings

So, it seems gnome doesnt like the user 'jason', I have no clue whats happening. This has never happened to me before

Re: [solved] locale issue

Or could it be something being set from GMD/gconf?  Do you get the same results when you rune 'locale' from the tty for jason?

Also, as a side note, I know you did not set this, but I actually do use en_US, and my utf setting is en_US.UTF-8 not en_US.utf8.  I don't know if they are considered equivalent or not...

Can you try uncommenting en_US.UTF-8 as well then running locale-gen?  Not with the intent of trying to set this to your user, but if the system is insisting on trying to use it, I wonder if haveing locale-gen configure that locale will make it play nice when it tries to pull this crap.

'locale' from tty for 'jason' is:

LANG=en_ZA.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

I have the exact same setup on another computer, no problem there, so I can do comparisons.

So this only occurs in X.  If that is the case, can you start X buy using... startx (or xinit, but startx is better), and see if things are different?

Doesnt look like its just X,
With start X into twm, 'local' gives:

LANG=en_ZA.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_ZA.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

Ill try startx into gnome

Re: [solved] locale issue

Yeah, I think that it is something within X, but I didn't mean that it was X itself.  I am rather leaning towrards GMD since it has much configuration controlled by the gconf thing that gnome uses.  So you have separate configuration variables that exist totally separately from the traditional methods of the rest of the system.

Edit:  This is why I was trying to get you to bypass GMD with startx.

And you were correct, looks like its GDM. startx into gnome is fine.

Re: [solved] locale issue

Ok! so I got it. on my laptop:
cat /var/lib/AccountsService/users/jason

[User]
Language=en_US.utf8
XSession=
Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/faces/cat-eye.jpg

cat /var/lib/AccountsService/users/asd

[User]
Language=
XSession=
Icon=

No idea how 'en_US.utf8' snuck into that file for 'jason'.... but that was the issue. I just removed 'en_US.utf8', now all is good with locales, sick of gnome now.

*Edit
on my PC I have:

jason-pc% cat /var/lib/AccountsService/users/jason
[User]
Language=en_ZA.utf8
XSession=gnome
Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/faces/energy-arc.jpg
jason-pc% locale
LANG=en_ZA.utf8
LC_CTYPE="en_ZA.utf8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_ZA.utf8"
LC_TIME="en_ZA.utf8"
LC_COLLATE="en_ZA.utf8"
LC_MONETARY="en_ZA.utf8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_ZA.utf8"
LC_PAPER="en_ZA.utf8"
LC_NAME="en_ZA.utf8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_ZA.utf8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_ZA.utf8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_ZA.utf8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_ZA.utf8"
LC_ALL=

looks like upper and lowercase utf8 makes no difference.... No idea why these files are so different, other than maybe these settings where set in an older version of gnome, had gnome 3.6 on my pc, my laptop has a less than 1 week old install
