Low fps after kernel upgrade

After I've upgraded the kernel to 2.6.14, I have terrible FPS.
I have a Nvidia FX 5900XT 128MB and normally in glxgears I get about 6000 but now
loke@plexus ~ > glxgears
7249 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1449.800 FPS
5737 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1147.400 FPS
5771 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1154.200 FPS
5720 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1144.000 FPS
5362 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1072.400 FPS
5332 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1066.400 FPS
5446 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1089.200 FPS

This is really low fps - and that's about what I got with my old MX440 64MB card.
Quake 4 is also unplayable now. I don't think it has anything to do with the new nvidia driver, because I've tried to downgrade the driver, and I get that bad FPS too.

I suspect that it's the kernel, but I might be wrong?
But a fix would be really nice, thanks.

Re: Low fps after kernel upgrade

Is Direct Rendering still enabled?

$ glxinfo | grep direct

Re: Low fps after kernel upgrade

Interesting, I'm actually seeing something similar.

__driCreateNewScreen - succeeded
1599 frames in 5.0 seconds = 319.800 FPS
1870 frames in 5.0 seconds = 374.000 FPS
1872 frames in 5.0 seconds = 374.400 FPS
1872 frames in 5.0 seconds = 374.400 FPS
1877 frames in 5.0 seconds = 375.400 FPS

That's 100 FPS less than the last time I checked. But Cube still runs quite smoothly. Perhaps there have been some changes to GLXGears?

Edit: Oh, wait a minute, what you guys are talking about is a nVidia issue, and what I'm seeing probably has nothing to do with it. Sorry, my bad.

Re: Low fps after kernel upgrade

It's not the kernel I think, it's 8174 which is known to be slower than 7676 ATM (checkout the official nvidia forums...). I also have a drop in FPS after upgrading (not too significant on my slow FX 5200), although I use -archck and not the stock kernel.
