Meanwhile I hassle around a few hours with .asoundrc, but I do not get what I want to have. I wish to be able to switch manually between the audio outputs (notebook speaker and HDMI). And adjust the volume of the current output. Sounds trivial, but if I switch to HDMI via asoundrc, changes to Master etc have no effect. Is there a way to achieve this?
Please feel free to correct my english.

I played with it some when I was trying to get DVD video/audio to go to a home theater while keeping application sounds on the analog speakers attached to my computer. It worked, but was a bit bloated for my taste.
