Now that you're in, let's check a few things. What does systemctl status gdm give you? Is the /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service symlink correct? Can you start gdm yourself with systemctl start gdm?

See if you can simply use systemctl to now start gdm. If you can, then you need to enable that so that it will come up on boot.

after running journalctl I see that the final error usually seems to be

gnome-session[639]Gdk-WARNING: gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server

but startx gives me the test windows fine, do I need to reinstall my gnome?

systemctl status gdm gives

active (running)

in green along with all the details (such as pid, etc.)

also the /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service says

ExecStart= /usr/bin/gdm
Restart=always
IgnoreSIGPIPE=no
BusName=org.gnome.DisplayManager
StandardOutput=syslog
StandardError=inherit

among other things
(which I assume is correct)

Wait, it point directly to /usr/bin/gdm? It should point to /usr/lib/systemd/system/gdm.service

Edit, ok, you posted while I was looking up the service name. You're reading the service file, not the symlink.

that's part of what it says when I cat it. I don't see anything like what you're saying, how do I fix this (also how would it get like that in the first place?)

Unfortunately, I don't think I can help anymore. Systemd seems to be functioning, it's Gnome that's a problem and I don't use Gnome. I would suggest starting a new thread about it.

I also don't use gnome so I second the suggestion to mark this thread [solved] (as the issue in the subject is solved) and start a new thread about the gnome issue specifically. I've used gnome for a grand total of what must be less than 1/2 hour or so and mostly I was just using a terminal emulator so my knowledge is almost entirely non-existent.
