newbie: "no sound" on debian

hello,

i posted this question 2 times on Debian-Users mailing list but nobody helped me. On google i found this "forum". i am  posting it here so that my problem can be solved. it is easy i know but being a newbie i am not able to solve it. i also tried "Debian FAQ", "Debian refrence & Debian user'guide -progency - (from debian.org) but did not find any solution. i have 4 days of experience in using a debian system. i am posting it with wealth of information.

      this is my Hardware:

            Processor:           AMD64 athlon 2800+
            Motherboard:       ASUS K8V-MX
            Chipset:              VIA K8M800, VIA VT8237R
Audio:                 ADI AD1888 SoundMAX 6-channel audio
                                       CODEC S/PDIF out interface

            Debian sarge (3.1r0a) x86 14 CDs pack

I had Fedora Core 3 (FC-3) (before Debian ) & audio worked excellent on FC-3 but video was not so good (as xine does not have Xv driver for my hardware). Now here on <Debian "sarge" x86> things are exactly opposite. video quality is good but no sound,  yes i watch videos without any sound. I am using GNOME, it has all the volume controls, it plays songs, videos but no sound. i enabled 'sound-server-startup' from GNOME control center.then all volume controls disappear from my system but still after reboot no sound. also audios start to hang as soon as i enable 'sound-server-startup' but after disabling it i get back all volume controls and no hangs in audio playing. it is strange for me. may you help me out on this "sound problem"?

I only want sound on my system, that is the only problem i have.
Here is some information i collected by using FC-3:

1. <anaconda> probes my video card and says:    VESA driver (generic)
2. after installation, it says following about my sound-card:

     Vendor: VIA technologies Inc.
     Driver: snd-via82xx
     Model: VT8233/A/8235/8237 - AC 97 audio controller

& finally these are the outputs of <dmesg> & <lspci> from my debian system (as root) :

i ordered "debian" from Cheep-Linux, UK (i myself live in INDIA) as a way to raise funding for Debian Organisation. i strongly support GPL & Open-Source. after using debian i found it far superior to FC.

thank you

Re: newbie: "no sound" on debian

yes, throw debian away, install Arch, and then proceed to the WIKI page on archlinux http://archlinux.org/ smile

Seriously tho, what utilities have you tried in Debian for setting up sound?

You may have more success looking for info regarding the sound package you want to use, ie Alsa, and get generic Linux help, rather than tying it to Debian.

Re: newbie: "no sound" on debian

Might have to do with the 2.4 kernel that Sarge uses. Have you installed ALSA?

(I would recommend switching to Etch (Testing), as Sarge will be very outdated very soon and Debian Testing is usually quite stable, but what the heck.)

Re: newbie: "no sound" on debian

debian should have alsaconf. Have you tried that?
Maybe try putting this in your /etc/modprobe.conf:

alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx
alias sound-slot-0 snd-via82xx

Re: newbie: "no sound" on debian

telling him to install arch will probably not fix the problem right away, eh? wink

snd-via82xx still has a hard time with many variants of the supported chipsets. especially regarding the mixer and chosing the appropriate input. you may try to fiddle with specific module parameters like i did on my old VIA board:

modprobe snd-via82xx dxs_support=1

i hear dxs_support can be set from 1 up to 4 chosing different methods of controlling the mixer. hope this helps.
also it might be worth a shot to probe snd-pcm-oss and snd-mixer-oss and see if it works using OSS.

btw, does debain still have alsaconf?

Re: newbie: "no sound" on debian

Be sure to install the alsa-modules package for your kernel, and alsa-base.

Then after you installed it (with apt-get install) run alsaconf to configure sound
