Greetings,
My appologies if the thread title isn't sufficient, I really do not know how to title this.
Anyway, seeing as Gnome 3.8 has hit testing, I decided to give it a try like a good little archer. I updated my computer and just to make sure I got everything, I ran pacman -S testing/gnome testing/gnome-extras, which install more things for gnome 3.8.
I then rebooted and tried to log in to the newly updated gnome, but no dice. Instead, after a 2-4 minute wait I get the grey screen with the sad computer telling me " Oh no, Something is Wrong" and the only option is to log out.
I tried clearing out gnome related files in /home, from /config and /local, and still no dice.
I should mention that:
1.) this is the 64 bit version
2.) gnome 3.6 functioned fine
3.) as KDE has been my main desktop for a while, I used KDM as my display manager
Any ideas, suggestions, or demands for certain logs?

What errors do you see in `dmesg` and `journalctl -b`?
All the best,

I had the same issue with my old archlinux, have you installed systemd ? Or is a fresh install of archlinux? Try removing kde, kdm and using gdm.
systemctl disable kdm.service
pacman -Rsc kde
pacman -S gnome gnome-extras gdm
systemctl enable gdm.service
restart
if that not work try with xinit instead gdm see the wiki to know how configure.

Greetings,
dmesg shows me a segfault with nepomukserver[579], error 4 in lbQtCore.so.4.8.4
and....
systemd-journald[109]: Failed to write entry, ignoring: Argument list too long
journalctl - b shows:
WARNING: App 'gnome-shell.desktop' respawning too quickly
Unrecoverable failure in required component gnome-shel.desktop
and it is not happy about NetworkManager activation failing for systemd

I installed Network Manager, didn't fix the issue.
I switched to GDM, couldnt even get GDM to load. Clearly there is something wrong here.... time to dig deeper.
I won't remove KDE, so if that is the only option then I guess that my days with Gnome3 are finished. I am hoping that there is another way to get it to work though....

I have the same "Something went wrong" except that nothing dubious appears in dmesg... I had to installed Openbox to be able to launch X (then Firefox). Actually it's the only environment I can run, Enlightenment fails to launch but without the X message, but currently stuck in qwerty (loadkeys fails).
I'm suffering.
Just what the h*** did this gnome update to my laptop ?
I used gnome 3.6 fallback style really perfectly.

I've got the same problem: Segmentation fault on libmedia-keys.so
I don't have kde installed. it's a gnome issue..
EDIT:
I've tried to install gnome-settings-daemon-git

Now gnome3.8 works. I've installed gdm-git from aur.
EDIT....
yeah gdm works, I'd been able to boot gnome only once.
After re-enabling gdm service and rebooting it freezed after password prompt..

Hi,
For me the only way to launch Gnome is to use "exec gnome-shell" in .xinitrc.
The standard "exec gnome-session" fails, with the message "Oh no something went wrong".
With "exec gnome-shell" the main Gnome Shell panel (on top) appears.
From the interactive "Activities" menu, typing "fire" or the full "firefox" does not even mention Firefox.
Only with Alt-F2 applications can be launched with the command line.
Also, I have wrong color handling in gnome-terminal. Only xterm displays things correctly and I am not typing blind because foreground=background.
And finally I can't logout, the only way seems to kill gnome-shell from another tty.
I installed GDM in case it would help. Launching GDM (simple "sudo gdm", to see what happens) kind of locked the current tty, nothing graphical appeared. I had to kill all gdm processes from another tty. dmesg showed errors related to Nouveau ("DATA ERROR" of different kinds). At this point in the tty where gdm was launched the concept of newline seemd unknown and I had to log again to experience a correct command-line interface again.
Just to try, I launched GDM as non-root, and it output errors about error messages overwritten, and that it indicates a "bug in someone's code".
If someone here ask, I'll do the test again to retrieve the exact message.
But I would deeply like to know why gnome 3.8 works correcly for some users and absolutely not for some others. Right now I use openbox but it's not exactly the desktop environment I'd like to use (I'm of the Gnome Classic gang).
Sometimes, but I don't have a clear way to reproduce it, I get errors that seems somewhat related to dbus.
Please, someone can tell what is necessary about DBus for Gnome, so I can at least check that ?

This is what I get in dmesg:

VICTORY
I got Gnome Shell working ! New Classic mode style !
The solution was rather simple : install gdb, start it, and log into your favourite session from there.
sudo systemctl start gdm.service
(in a standard tty)
So, it works. I'm 90% satisfied.
Actually I like not having graphics launching by default at boot, and I would like to be able to launch this Gnome session without the GDM help.
Anyone has an easy trick to do this (manually start an X session under Gnome, without GDM) ?

I'm getting this problem with my old pc. I can log in to a gnome-flashback session and only after I have done:
pkill --HUP gnome-shell
in another TTY. Would be interested to see a better solution.
