[solved] Linux does not detect fan of Eeepc 1001ha

I have Eeepc 1001ha with a fan, but linux does not detect it:

$ sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +68.0°C (crit = +88.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +44.0°C (crit = +90.0°C)

In other  cases, sensors return also 'eeepc-isa-0000' sensor. I know I have to install fancontrol after, but lm_sensors does not return properly...

Any hint?

Thanks,
Xan.

Re: [solved] Linux does not detect fan of Eeepc 1001ha

The system does not detect the fan, and then it reboots because the laptop reaches high temperatures. I want to solve that. I know I need fancontrol, but before, I need that kernel detects my fan. What can I do?

Re: [solved] Linux does not detect fan of Eeepc 1001ha

There seem to be so many different eeepc models. Please add some more information:
1. Did you follow the "lm_sensors" wikipage to detect the sensors? What was the output? (not the one you have above, but from the detection)
2. Do you see the "coretemp" module loaded? Any Eeepc specific modules loaded?  Any module with "acpi" in the name?
3. Did you try booting with the fallback kernel? Is the module output from (3.) different then?

Re: [solved] Linux does not detect fan of Eeepc 1001ha

1. Yes. The output of the sensors-detect is here:

[xan@gerret ~]$ sudo sensors-detect
[sudo] password for xan:
# sensors-detect revision 6170 (2013-05-20 21:25:22 +0200)
# System: ASUSTeK Computer INC. 1001HA [x.x] (laptop)
# Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. 1005HA

This program will help you determine which kernel modules you need
to load to use lm_sensors most effectively. It is generally safe
and recommended to accept the default answers to all questions,
unless you know what you're doing.

Some south bridges, CPUs or memory controllers contain embedded sensors.
Do you want to scan for them? This is totally safe. (YES/no):
Module cpuid loaded successfully.
Silicon Integrated Systems SIS5595... No
VIA VT82C686 Integrated Sensors... No

VIA Nano thermal sensor... No

Some Super I/O chips contain embedded sensors. We have to write to
standard I/O ports to probe them. This is usually safe.
Do you want to scan for Super I/O sensors? (YES/no):
Probing for Super-I/O at 0x2e/0x2f
Trying family `National Semiconductor/ITE'... No
Trying family `SMSC'... No
Trying family `VIA/Winbond/Nuvoton/Fintek'... No
Trying family `ITE'... No
Probing for Super-I/O at 0x4e/0x4f
Trying family `National Semiconductor/ITE'... No
Trying family `SMSC'... No
Trying family `VIA/Winbond/Nuvoton/Fintek'... No
Trying family `ITE'... No

Some hardware monitoring chips are accessible through the ISA I/O ports.
We have to write to arbitrary I/O ports to probe them. This is usually
safe though. Yes, you do have ISA I/O ports even if you do not have any
ISA slots! Do you want to scan the ISA I/O ports? (YES/no):
Probing for `National Semiconductor LM78' at 0x290... No
Probing for `National Semiconductor LM79' at 0x290... No
Probing for `Winbond W83781D' at 0x290... No
Probing for `Winbond W83782D' at 0x290... No

Lastly, we can probe the I2C/SMBus adapters for connected hardware
monitoring devices. This is the most risky part, and while it works
reasonably well on most systems, it has been reported to cause trouble
on some systems.
Do you want to probe the I2C/SMBus adapters now? (YES/no):
Sorry, no supported PCI bus adapters found.
Module i2c-dev loaded successfully.

Next adapter: i915 gmbus ssc (i2c-0)
Do you want to scan it? (yes/NO/selectively): yes

Next adapter: i915 gmbus vga (i2c-1)
Do you want to scan it? (yes/NO/selectively): yes

Next adapter: i915 gmbus panel (i2c-2)
Do you want to scan it? (yes/NO/selectively): yes

Next adapter: i915 gmbus dpc (i2c-3)
Do you want to scan it? (yes/NO/selectively): yes

Next adapter: i915 gmbus dpb (i2c-4)
Do you want to scan it? (yes/NO/selectively): yes

Next adapter: i915 gmbus dpd (i2c-5)

Now follows a summary of the probes I have just done.
Just press ENTER to continue:

Driver `coretemp':
  * Chip `Intel digital thermal sensor' (confidence: 9)

Do you want to overwrite /etc/conf.d/lm_sensors? (YES/no):
Unloading i2c-dev... OK
Unloading cpuid... OK

[xan@gerret ~]$

(I answer 'yes' to all questions)

Good question, maybe someone owning your model knows. I don't see any loaded in both of your outputs.
Have you tried the one included in the kernel for starters?

# modprobe eeepc-laptop

Then try the sensors detect again. You can try

#find /proc -name fan

for output too.

If that does not help, there appear to be those specific eeepc Aur packages. I had a look too, but your specific model does not seem listed. Have you tried any of those? Maybe if you leave a link to your thread in one of the recently updates ones in AUR and someone can help you.

Re: [solved] Linux does not detect fan of Eeepc 1001ha

I have deceptionant results:

modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'eeepc_laptop': No such device

and void to second.

I searched too in AUR but the problem is what package I should use? I'm a little bit confusing about it. I searched in google and I found nothing. This is my last bullet ;-)

Re: [solved] Linux does not detect fan of Eeepc 1001ha

Your remark about the AUR packages is a little irritating actually, as is the amount of evident proactivity imho. It's not that you are faced with 20 AUR alternatives.
Maybe check if a bios update is avaiable. Also you could boot a live-usb of ubuntu (one of the eeepc modules is maintained there), check if the fan spins then and find out the module it uses.

I test it with ubuntu 13.04. Here are the results?

Just use "sensors", listen to the fan or use above posts. Anyhow, that was a good test with the live-CD. I see no mention of a fan anywhere in the output and the asus specific modules appear the same as with Arch at a glance. So I guess you are right: that fan of yours appears to be broken. The only thing that I find strange is that the bios is not showing an error beep, but I have no idea whether your bios should do such. Some people would check the connectors themselves and/or just replace it.

I could not run "sensors" command in console, because ubuntu has not "lm_sensors" installed by default in live CD. The most fitting thing is lshw. I'm not ubuntu expert. Anyone could help us?

The most probable is that I have fan broken. But I don't know how to know it before disamble the laptop....

Thanks anyway,
Xan.

Re: [solved] Linux does not detect fan of Eeepc 1001ha

I have same netbook purchased in Japan. Also troubled with overheat problem since 3 weeks ago. But now solved.

Regarding output of  "sensors", kernel driver "coretemp" could not get accurate temp from core chip.
See this disucussion,

https://code.google.com/p/open-hardware … ail?id=128

Though "TjMax" value of 90 degree is the "standard" value for N270 atom processor provided by Intel, this value have to be calibrated because cooling methods may vary. 1001HA uses thin and wide "heat-spreader" panel under the hood .... keyboard... I've disassembled my EeePC for several times:-) and processor is NOT COOLED  DIRECTLY by fan.

You can specify adjusted "tjmax=" for coretemp driver on load. For example, add following line into /etc/modules:

coretemp tjmax=118

The value "118"  working for me. With this parameter, CPU temperature mostly under 65 degrees celcius. No reboots, no sudden lockups. Now ACPI(BIOS?) is performing a proper cooling method, I think. Please try.

In addition, I'm using shell script called "TLP" because "jupiter applet" has been closed project since ... last year.

Hope tips helps you,

Re: [solved] Linux does not detect fan of Eeepc 1001ha

Thanks, Max Goto, but it's too late: this laptop is broken. The power connector (in motherboard) is broken. So I have not this laptop.

I can't check i, but I marked as solved, overall for people like you and me having the same problem. Thank you _very_ much.
