Re: Trying to fix the backlight keys on Asus UX31A/32VD

Just complaining won't help, open a kernel bugzilla entry and/or mail the relevant mailing list(s).

As of kernel 3.8 the acpi_osi fix seems to be broken again... Any suggestions?

Re: Trying to fix the backlight keys on Asus UX31A/32VD

Bios version 2.15, Kernel 3.9.4-1 and acpi_osi=          seems ok for me, wifi and brightness

acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" and acpi_osi=Linux not works on my ux31a with this kernel version.

Re: Trying to fix the backlight keys on Asus UX31A/32VD

This is all about ACPI. Firmware writes are able to check for features using the _OSI function. But as the Linux kernel gets developed, some old assumptions may no longer be valid and cause "bugs" like brightness hotkeys not functioning. Using a specific OSI string works around issues in the firmware.

Think of ACPI code like this:

if OSI has "Windows 2012":
    # assume Windows 8
    toggle_brightness()
elif OSI has "Linux":
    # assume that <very old version of Linux> is broken
    ignore_request()
else:
    # assume older versions, Win 7, etc.
    old_way_to_toggle_brightness()

Normally, the Linux ACPI subsystem asserts true for all requests for "OSI has ...". In the past, detection of Linux caused many features to get disabled even if newer Linux versions support the feature. Therefore Linux always reports false for "OSI has Linux".

Consider another case: Windows 7 has a bug that gets fixed in Windows 8. Linux tries to be as compatible as Windows wrt ACPI, but as it was based on Windows 7, the new way to accomplish something is not added although Linux reports to be Windows 8 compatible. So you add acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" to disable Windows 8 compatibility reporting and stuff works. Later on, the bugs gets fixed and you need to remove the acpi_osi parameter to make the new code work.

Re: Trying to fix the backlight keys on Asus UX31A/32VD

On my UX32VD I have to use this command to make it work :
acpi_osi="!Windows 2006" acpi_osi="!Windows 2009" acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" acpi_osi="Linux"

I still have this error :
ACPI Error: Current brightness invalid (20130117/video-376)

Re: Trying to fix the backlight keys on Asus UX31A/32VD

Hi! Despite not being an ArchLinux user, I found this thread to be the most relevant to the problem I encounter.
In my case it's kernel 3.14.15 running on Asus N550LF. No matter which acpi_osi parameters I specify I get either of the following two results:
- no reaction to Fn+F(5|6), nothing in dmesg, nothing in showkeys, ergo nothing in xev;
- or (with apci_osi="!Windows 2012" for example) I get the following in dmesg:

Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0.GFX0.GCBL] (Node ffff8801a847e9b0), AE_AML_UNINITIALIZED_ELEMENT (20131218/psparse-536)
Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0.LPCB.EC0_.SBRN] (Node ffff8801a8448370), AE_AML_UNINITIALIZED_ELEMENT (20131218/psparse-536)
Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0.LPCB.EC0_._Q0F] (Node ffff8801a84483c0), AE_AML_UNINITIALIZED_ELEMENT (20131218/psparse-536)

I have tried fixing acpi_call code for the current kernels to be able to use the script but failed. Too many changes in proc code. :-(

Could you please help me in resolving this issue?

UPD: Manual backlight handling works, KDE detects the controls and correctly handles them. So everything works but the keys...

Re: Trying to fix the backlight keys on Asus UX31A/32VD

We need more context to eventually help you.
- You said you're using kernel 3.14.15. Is this the lts kernel (current lts is according to pacman 3.14.19-1).
- How are you booting? Legacy Bios, UEFI
  * What bootloader, bootmanager or UEFISTUB.
  * How did you enter the kernel arguments?
- Bios Version? (When did you buy this laptop).

Re: Trying to fix the backlight keys on Asus UX31A/32VD

Thank you for the prompt reply!

As I've mentioned, I'm not an ArchLinux user. I'm on Debian. 3.14.15 is the latest kernel available in its 'unstable' branch at the moment.
Hm.. didn't think the boot process might be relevant. OK. I'm booting through UEFI from grub.
As for BIOS version, it's the latest available on Asus site for N550LF -- version 212.

I think you should read the answer above:

I'm sure kernel developers will be more helpful and know exactly what the problem is with your backlight keys.

Re: Trying to fix the backlight keys on Asus UX31A/32VD

The bootprocess might be relevant, for example: I had to experiment a litte bit how to escape the double quotes so that the refind.conf accepts the acpi_osi argument correctly ->  my_opt=""with quotes"" (according to http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/configfile.html - had to look that up again, since I couldn't remember it). I kinda missed your mentioning of your model, don't know the specifics with regards to the n550lf v212 model. I just asked, because the "newest" bios version for the UX32VD is kinda flaky, and Asus didn't bother to fix that one.

I have tried fixing acpi_call code for the current kernels to be able to use the script but failed. Too many changes in proc code. :-(

What script do you mean, the one I posted a year ago or so (also on github), or the other one from bumblebee?
..
Edit:
Maybe (as I explained in my script/wiki ) the offsets aren't the same (0x120, 0x160 for DIDL and CADL), you might need to fix that; or the problem is only somehow related to the bug that hit the UX31A/32VD, but isn't the same -> cannot be fixed by this script / kernel fix.
The fix for this bug was merged in v3.8 - actually in 3.7, but they introduced a related bug in one of the later 3.7 RC kernels that killed the fix, until it was finally fixed in 3.8.

Re: Trying to fix the backlight keys on Asus UX31A/32VD

I just put GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2012\""
into /etc/default/grub and it works. In grub config itself I see that quotes are moved: "acpi_osi=!Windows 2012"
Anyway, I saw the behavior change with that, so it must be correct way to quote.

I need bumblebee's acpi_call in order to find out the correct offsets for your script. But I can't compile it.
(I'm not aware of any bumblebee's script, just acpi_call module.)

BTW, I've tried running 3.16.3 kernel and I'm not able to reproduce those ACPI errors. Now, no matter what I put into acpi_osi, I get nothing at all all the time.

Edit: Huh! I don't need acpi_backlight=vendor with 3.16.3 anymore. ACPI doesn't create it's own backlight structures in /sys/class/backlight, only intel's one is left.
Ergo, I don't need to specify Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight" for intel driver in Xorg. Nice!

Re: Trying to fix the backlight keys on Asus UX31A/32VD

Guess you should make a bug report on the github's project page for acpi_call.  You said that you're running debian. Try the 3.2 kernel or 3.12 in wheezy-backports. The other solution would be to compile a 3.8 kernel or so from scratch.
Edit: Try to install arch linux and install the acpi_call package from the AUR, it might even suffice to just boot the arch linux installer / live image. I just tested it, it is working with the current kernel (3.16.2), don't know why you can't compile it on your debian box, might have to do with gcc.

Re: Trying to fix the backlight keys on Asus UX31A/32VD

Stupid me! Debian has compilable acpi_call sources. So, for BIOS_VERSION="N550LF.212" IGDM_BASE=0xCAB01018. Offsets are the same.
I've managed to reproduce aforementioned acpi errors with 'acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi='.
I've checked DIDL and CADL 32 bits before starting your script and see that they are identical. Alas!

Re: Trying to fix the backlight keys on Asus UX31A/32VD

Cute... removing acpi_backlight=vendor and leaving only acpi_osi=[empty] kinda fixed it. (Scared of all those differences in dmesg after that.)
Backlight handling works even in console. Even the lower limit is like in Win8.1.
It's interesting why monitor backlight handling works in console but keyboard's doesn't... (Works in X)
And quite irrelevant to this thread, KDE notices the changes in keyboard's backlight, but doesn't notice changes in monitor's backlight.

Thank you for bearing with me!

Re: Trying to fix the backlight keys on Asus UX31A/32VD

Just to clarify, now that you got the correct offsets, my script got it working? That is still kinda strange.  My script does essentially the same what the in 3.7 merged kernel fix does, but kinda hotswapping style. Guess the only thing remaining is to report this to the kernel maintainers/ debian kernel guys / whatever, glad you got it semi-fixed.

Re: Trying to fix the backlight keys on Asus UX31A/32VD

No, it's not the script that helped. The contents of CADL and DIDL are always the same. So script would have done nothing in this case.
I just removed acpi_backlight=vendor from kernel command line parameters. That's what helped.

Re: Trying to fix the backlight keys on Asus UX31A/32VD

Oh, lol, even better. Now that you mention that, stupid me for not remembering that. I also tried it initially with acpi_backlight=vendor, and it triggered a similar error, totally forgot about that -_-. Well, whatever, I think this specific bug is gone after all.
I'm surprised that no admin already closed that thread due to .. let's call it semi-necro bumping.
@mods, would some of you be so kind as to prepend a [SOLVED] to this thread's title (I don't have access to the bugmenot account anymore, since you apparently disabled it) kthxbye.

Re: Trying to fix the backlight keys on Asus UX31A/32VD

Eventually, you would have solved it by scanning through the whole thread and the wiki. I'm kinda surprised that nobody chased you away with the argument that you aren't using Arch and that you should ask your question in the debian forum/irc channel / whatever.
