Pacman -Syu removes internet access

big_smile  smile

     I performed ....pacman -Syu....
Not knowing what steps the system goes through I allowed it to proceed with every item listed in sequences before the download began by answering YES to all.

Approx one hour later the root prompt appeared signifying completed activity in pacman.   (upgrade completed I assume)

Subsequently I find no internet access for KDE e-mail, no ping capability in command line, and no "disk Free" access to hdd's.  Entry of ...ifconfig eth0... produces..

Warning: cannot open /proc/net/dev (no such file or directory). Limited output.     eth0: error fetching interface info: Device not found.

Please advise repair action...perhaps through arch install CD.

Prediction...This year will be a very odd year!

Re: Pacman -Syu removes internet access

Fix your modules.conf, assuming there was stuff in it.  Make sure you have iputils and module-init-tools installed proper (upgrade them even though they're up to date).

I notice you only gave part of your pacman.log.  Were module-init-tools, coreutils, and iputils installed correctly?

I am unfamiliar with what should be in the pacman log.  I may not have seen all of it because I am ignorant of its full extent.  I spent much time in keying in the data that appeared when I called it up.  I will search it further and see if there is more.

As to upgrading, I have no access to internet to upgrade.

I will look at modules.conf and determine what I can about its contents.

Re: Pacman -Syu removes internet access

You should still have the package files in your cache.  Just do pacman -S's.  If the files are in your cache it will still be able to upgrade.

Just received your last and am responding to your previous post.

I checked the listing in kedit of /var/log/pacman/log and the data you mention is not included.  I reprinted everything listed.

     I tried to ....ls -v /var/log/pacman/log   |less
Result  :  Ls: no such command

I checked /etc/modules.conf and found two saved files....one was the normal file(with reduced aliases listed) and the other the pacsave file with full aliases included.  There are several other files with tildes which I haven't cleared such that I can fix things that go bad.

I have no ping capability nor do I have kmixer.

I read your last post as.......S*s.....  pacman -S*s.... is that correct?

/var/cache/pacman/pkg  in kedit lists all pkg's from abiword to zlib.

Pacman -Ss..... lists and describes packages in a runon format .   Would take hours to read them all.

As reported before, the reprinted listing of /var/log/pacman/log was everything in it.

Make your modules.conf have everything that modules.conf.pacsave has in it, as well as the stuff already in modules.conf.  Reboot.

Will attend to that while you are studying the remarks below...

Ran pacman -Syu... again and received conflict list in /var/lib/scrollkeeper.

Re: Pacman -Syu removes internet access

Then the upgrade probably didn't complete, because of scrollkeeper.  Pacman -Sf scrollkeeper.

     Performed the force operation.

     Then ran ...Pacman -Syu....

For the first time it started upgrading the packages and I noted it called for running lilo.  I added the reverse ide append to the lilo.(lilo.conf.pacnew)

A number of files utilize a new extension... .pacnew.  Do I have to do anything with those?  I have the normal lilo and the new pacnew lilo files.

I ran lilo and will restart in arch after I finish this post.

The lilo still shows a Fatal note as before.

Re: Pacman -Syu removes internet access

Check the man page for pacman and the mailing list about what the pacnew and pacsave files are.  Essentially they are backups or new copies created by pacman.  The programs don't use them; it's your job to move changes over to the actual config files.

What is the lilo fatal error?  I don't remember seeing that one in this thead...

The fatal error is the reference to vmlinuz which I had indicated in another thread we covered.  My system has no vmlinuz link.
    The arch lilo worked OK.

I now can call up "disc free" but the vfat HDD's are rejected by the kernel according to the error window.
     I do not have KMIXER.
I do not have internet or e-mail.
I do not have audio from CD but do get control.
What does one do to use "network start"***********************?
In "ifconfig' file no internet TCP/IP references.
Would appreciate advice toward getting the internet accessed.

Re: Pacman -Syu removes internet access

I suspect you are missing crucial packages.  Have you checked whether you have the ones mentioned by xentac in his first posting above?  Also have look through /var/log/pacman.log and see what packages were removed and not replaced (although bear in mind that sometimes a package is intentionally replaced by one of a different name; there will be info in the forums in such cases).

"pacman -S's" meant pacman -S in the plural: ie do pacman -S for each package you are going to add.

Re: Pacman -Syu removes internet access

Do you still have /etc/rc.conf ?   If so, which daemons are listed there which you need to start?

How about burning a LiveCD in Windows, booting into that environment, mounting your Arch partition and copying across to Arch anything vital which you appear to be missing?

Sorry for the last post...found /etc/rc.d

     I tried the following:

     cd /etc/rc.d..... rc.d#./network start
     result:  SIOCSIFNETMASK: no such device
                eth0:  no such device
                 SIOOCSIFNETMASK: NO SUCH DEVICE
                 SIOCSIBRDADDR; NO SUCH DEVICE
                 SIOCADDRT; nETWORK IS UNREACHABLE

also tried  cd /etc/rc.d.... rc.d#./kdm stop
result:  kdm stopped and console prompt appeared

       re-entered cd /etc/rc.d........rc.d#./kdm restart

      Kdm restarted

The above indicates that the command functions but that something is wrong with the network.

Re: Pacman -Syu removes internet access

I still think you should focus on whether any packages  - especially the ones suggested by Xentac - might have failed to install.  Pacman should already have downloaded all the packages necessary to upgrade your system and they will all be stored in the cache, so it should not be necessary for you to gain internet access to install/reinstall them.  If it turns out there are reasons why pacman does not want to install one or more of those packages, you can then seek help here about how to overcome that problem.

Re: Pacman -Syu removes internet access

big_smile  smile Dauphin:

I have researched the files and determined that the original problem was:
I did not complete the download and install of the upgrade because there was a conflict in scrollkeepers.

After correcting the scrollkeepers with -Sf scrollkeepers, I was surprised by the upgrading that occured when I repeated pacman -Syu which had not accured previously.  All of this could have been avaided with some understanding on my part what constitutes a pacman upgrade sequence.

At this time, I have looked at pacman log and determined that the upgrades are logged, probably 100 items.
The previous post proves I have "start" control.

One observation: lilo as downloaded by pacman would not work in my system because it doesn't include an append for ide=reverse.

Another observation concerning eth0 which I recall from initial arch problems....eth0 for static IP is not the norm..dhcp is

I suspect that is involved in reconnect for network/TCP/IP.

Examining the eth0 setup in the files shows all entries as correct.

All entries in KDE e-mail are correct.

Attempts to start network in /etc/rc.d failed.

I have entered all data in pacsave for /etc/modules.conf into the /etc/modules,conf file.

I have yet to get KDEMixer going and any sound as well as the internet and I receive "vfat is not supported in this kernel" when addressing HDD's in "disc Free".  I don't believe the message!!!

I don't have a clue for what is next!

Re: Pacman -Syu removes internet access

After changing modules.conf, did you 'depmod -a' and reboot?  That's the easiest way to get htose changes into your system.  I bet a reboot will get your network going again.

Depmod is part of the module-init-tools package.  Have you tried reinstalling it yet?  I still suspect you're missing that package, maybe iputils and coreutils as well.
