The HP Officejet 8100 Pro was immediately recognized in CUPS, I didn't even had to add it manually in there.
However, it required the following work:
1) To make it work in LAN without DHCP, I wanted to set its IP to match my network.
By default it uses 169.254.68.142, so I had to configure one LAN interface of my Arch PC to match that network, then you can simply access its control interface via webbrowser to its IP, and change its IP there. I set it to static 192.168..something.
2) When I want to print in duplex mode, I first had to go to "hardware options" in CUPS and set "Duplex" (the only option offered in there, which makes sense) to enabled.
However...! When printing, for example in LibreOffice, after selecting the correct paper type (A4 Duplex), I have to set duplex option to "ignore". Only if this is done it WILL actually print in duplex-mode. Otherwise it'll print single pages.. exactly the wrong way round. (More about the bug here https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1088281 )
3) Usually you want to choose hpcups for driver, not hpijs, or you won't have some printing options available. From what I read, hpcups is basically just better than hpijs, no drawbacks.
HOWEVER, I tested the hpijs driver and noticed that it offers so called "fastdraft" printout option, which is NOT available in hpcups (it only offers "normal" draft). A page printed in Fastdraft mode seems to use less toner, so I added an hpijs version of the printer for now, for when I want to save toner.. silly drivers, geez.
4) In Wine the printer is immediately available, but printing will only print the first page, then the job is "completed" .. So I have to print to "Virtual PDF printer" (which will by default save to /var/spool/... if not changed in /etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf) and print the resulting pdf file with evince or something.
Waking up from its sleep mode is instant, and printing also starts instantly.
The only remaining (minor) problem is this https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1295747

This is not really fora material. If you are going to go through the trouble of documenting the steps necessary to get this printer working, you should put it in the wiki where it belongs.

Please consider that. It would make a good addition.
