What is utf-8?

I have read the wiki on locale naming.
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Locale_Naming

I would like to change my locale in rc.conf from en-US to the locale for my country.  But I see two options -- en-CA and en-CA.UTF-8

What is UTF-8?  Are there any advantages of UTF-8?

Re: What is utf-8?

UTF-8 is for full unicode support. Use it, even if you don't think you need it in the first place.
