Artifacts in Steam Dialog Boxes

Some dialog boxes in Steam are "garbled", it looks like artifacting. I can play games fine though, so it doesn't seem to be a problem with drivers not working. It doesn't seem to be all dialog boxes, but for example, the box that pops up after selecting a folder to add a library is always messed up.

Possibly relevant:
ATI HD 5800 GPU with Open Source drivers
Openbox
linux-ck Kernel

Here's a picture of what happens:

Interestingly the dialog box appears to be an error, though I don't know what the error says. In the console at the same time I see:
sh: /mnt/storage/Steam//SteamApps/.steam_exec_test.sh: Permission denied
sh: /mnt/storage/Steam//SteamApps/.steam_exec_test.sh: Permission denied

The permissions on that folder should allow it to execute shell scripts there, so the only reason I can think of is the double slashes after the "Steam" dir. I can actually successfully create a folder in my home directory and add it to my steam library, but even if I create a symlink to the steam folder in my storage drive it pops up this dialog box. First priority is to actually read the dialog box, I guess!

Anyone have any ideas?
