Strange Lagging in GNOME and KDE

Hey there!

I installed arch and Gnome (and later tried) on my desktop computer today and it worked free from lag for about one hour. Now it's behaving very strange, and I've been close to throwing my monitors out the window about 20 times.

However, I don't know what's causing the problem and therefore don't know how to fix it. I will try to describe this mysterious lagging:

Sometimes when I'm surfing the web with chromium (or using any other application so far) the windows kind of freeze. I'm unable to click anything in the window, and I can't go to the "Activities" in the top left corner. It always happens when I'm running the terminal (rxvt) and chromium at the same time. I can't change the focus of the windows by clicking on them, but I can change the focus by alt-tabbing.

Can I debug this or something, cause now it's close to unusable? (I'm quite new to arch, so please don't reply with ultra-advanced maneuvers)

Re: Strange Lagging in GNOME and KDE

What's your graphics card?

Check dmesg or Xorg.0.log after it freezes to see if there's anything weird.

Re: Strange Lagging in GNOME and KDE

My graphics card is a Nvidia GTX660, but I don't think it has to do with the graphics, since it's mostly the focus of the windows that isn't functioning properly. Sometimes when I'm in a program that I have focused, I can't even click anything in it (for example i can't scroll or click links in chromium).

Here's my Xorg.0.log anyways:

From what I understand it only shows a few errors for the mouse/keyboard, and that's because I changed the driver yesterday.

Re: Strange Lagging in GNOME and KDE

I don't know if this has anything to do with this, but when I'm running geany and I'm trying to change window focus, this error displays:

(geany:2653): Gdk-CRITICAL **: IA__gdk_window_get_events: assertion `GDK_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed

(geany:2653): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_ref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

(geany:2653): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

EDIT: After some googling about this problem, it's described as the problem I'm experiencing. What's sad is that I didn't find any solution to it...

Re: Strange Lagging in GNOME and KDE

Hmm, installing the 'gtk' and the 'glib' package seems to have solved the problem temporarily, but after a reboot it's back

Re: Strange Lagging in GNOME and KDE

No one? I even tried running Ubuntu in the live environment... Seems like my hardware isn't supported, even if I use some of the most used parts in the world

Thank you. I'm not "machine swapping" as far as I know.

Re: Strange Lagging in GNOME and KDE

Well, swapping would be a pretty reasonable explanation as to why you system would be doing this.  So it might be good to see if you can figure it out.  Do you have swap space?

Re: Strange Lagging in GNOME and KDE

No, I don't. I assume that's if you have a part of your disc that is with the swap file system, and I didn't ever make one of those. I'm sorry to making this harder that it would if I would be better at Linux.

Re: Strange Lagging in GNOME and KDE

I had similar problem once. It dissapeard when I switched to nouveau driver. But in my case the whole desktop was frozen, and the only thing working was the mouse coursor. I didn't have enough spare time to investigate back then so I have no idea what caused the problem. In your case it seems like a problem with hard drive access. Do you use any power saving features? Maybe your hdd is just spinning down a lot and the lag is a result of the system waiting for it to spin up?

I think it would be a good idea to monitor your logs at the time, for example using watch comand:

watch -n 1 "sudo tail /var/log/dmesg.log"

Also try different log files if this doesn't result in anything conclusive.

Re: Strange Lagging in GNOME and KDE

I experience a similiar issue with my laptop. I'm running the nvidia driver:

02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G98M [GeForce 9200M GS] (rev a1)
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation C79 [GeForce 9400M G] (rev b1)

As soon as I'm using an external monitor over HDMI this problem keeps popping up in Xorg.0.log A LOT:

[ 28.076] (II) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Display (LGD (DFP-0)) does not support NVIDIA 3D Vision
[ 28.076] (II) NVIDIA(GPU-0): stereo.
[ 28.076] (**) NVIDIA(0): Using HorizSync/VertRefresh ranges from the EDID for display
[ 28.076] (**) NVIDIA(0): device LGD (DFP-0) (Using EDID frequencies has been
[ 28.076] (**) NVIDIA(0): enabled on all display devices.)
[ 28.148] (II) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Display (DELL2407WFPHC (DFP-1)) does not support NVIDIA 3D
[ 28.148] (II) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Vision stereo.
[ 28.148] (**) NVIDIA(0): Using HorizSync/VertRefresh ranges from the EDID for display
[ 28.148] (**) NVIDIA(0): device DELL2407WFPHC (DFP-1) (Using EDID frequencies has
[ 28.148] (**) NVIDIA(0): been enabled on all display devices.)

While this happens, EVERYTHING in Gnome becomes choppy and slow (watching a video, using Firefox for browsing, etc.), Xorg uses up between 50 and 100% of CPU (because obviously it gets flooded with these stupid driver messages every couple of milliseconds).
Also sometimes mouse and/or keyboard starts to freeze in X to the point where I sometimes have to restart gdm in whole.
A very unpleasant side effect of this is also my laptop heating up A LOT.

That's why I'm definitely suspecting the Nvidia driver to cause this in combination with Xorg.

Anyone come across similiar?

Re: Strange Lagging in GNOME and KDE

Okay... I'm on nouveau right now, and the problem persists. As much as I wanted to suspect Nvidia to be the cause of this, it is much more likely that Xorg is broken in a wicked way since version 1.14
Will try downgrading half the system and see what versions work out for me.

Re: Strange Lagging in GNOME and KDE

I am on KDE and when docking or pressing the file upload button in Chrome the corresponding system dialog takes forever to come up.  Nothing in X log, nothing in dmesg and nothing in journalctl. I have several gigs of free RAM and zero swap set up. It's not swapping.

restarting plasma-desktop gives me these:

As I recently removed initscripts I am nearly 100% that dbus is not working / starting right somehow now. My battery monitor is broken, too.

Re: Strange Lagging in GNOME and KDE

I'm experiencing similar issues in Gnome. It boils down to this:
When I focus on Evince or Sublime Text 3 I see a spike in CPU. When I unfocus or even drag a window before named programs CPU settles down on a low level. Evence would sometimes not allow me to focus / scroll.
In the logs I found this:

aug 01 20:29:49 arch gnome-session[676]: Waarschuwing van vensterbeheer:last_focus_time (47434116) is greater than comparison timestamp (47434080). This most likely represents a buggy client sending inaccurate timestamps in messages such as _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW. Trying to work around...

and several other repeated errors.
As usual the process is gnome-session so that's impossible to debug. I do think it came with the  update to 3.10 kernel or Gnome 3.8.3 or some GTK thing.

Re: Strange Lagging in GNOME and KDE

We know that at least one of the causes for this is caused by a libusbx deadlock. A fixed package has been released, it's in testing.

Re: Strange Lagging in GNOME and KDE

I'm not sure I'm experiencing the same as you guys, so I made another topic for my issue. Comments welcome! https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=168157
P.S.: Downgrading worked for me (for now).
