How to request for an update?

How to call for an update when I want an unsupported package to be updated to the latest version? What is the typical way?

Is it better using the "Flag Out-of-date" or even building and uploading my own package to get it quickly up to date?

Flag the package out of date, and maybe notify the maintainer about it in e-mail.

You may of course build the newest package on your box, but do not upload it in the AUR, as it would only cause a huge mess for everyone.

There is only one exception for that: if the package is orphaned, you may adopt it, so you'll be the maintainer.

How long to wait? When is it ok to set a package orphaned?

Re: How to request for an update?

The package maintainers don't jump on command, it'll take however long until they get around to updating it. Probably not too long though. Also, you cannot make a package an orphan, in AUR (only place this is possible), the person who uploaded the package is the only one who can orphan it, then it's free for someone else to grab.

Re: How to request for an update?

The TUs can orphan pkgs on request but we tend to give people at least a month before we steal their pkgs off them - we have this policy under discussion actually, when is stale too stale smile

Has there been any resolution on this policy? When it is requested of the TU, should they at least attempt notification first?  I was maintaining the java-gnome packages and they got orphanned. I went to update them today (b/c the gnome servers have started hosting the source again) but found they were taken from me.

What if package is in extra?  Email to maintainer?

No, not yet. I'll see if I can get this resolved.

I think that there should be a notification first.  However, as there is no guidelines yet, it is left at the TU discretion. Sorry to learn that you lost your packages. sad

Flag it out-of-date. Maybe also send an email to maintainer.

It's okay. Just a shock is all, I suppose.

I apologize for that - I was told that you were notified (though there is no email when flagging a package out of date).  However, the packages were built against Gnome 2.10, and 2.12 was released a month ago (Oct 5th), so I assumed the packages were stagnant.

I apologize for the inconvienance

Re: How to request for an update?

Where do I find the email of a maintainer?  I looked on the memberlist and didn't find him there.
