Ok I have just run a pacman -Syu. I changed the boot file to use initrd as instructed. arch boots fine but when I startx it tells me Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module! So I ran a pacman -S nvidia. And I downloaded a new driver but ... it gave me this when it tried to install ...
You hav e to shutdown Xserver to finish installation! You hav eto rerun 'pacman -S nvidia'
Fatal: Module nvidia not found.
Can anyone help ?

just to verify, you ran pacman -S nvidia from the console *after* X crashed, not inside an X session that didn't use the nvidia driver?

Are you using kernel 2.6.14.4-2? If not, upgrade to that version. It's supposed to solve a nvidia problem.

hey all, been away from arch for awhile (not by choice) and used to be on here as jerrym, but anyway...
i have this issue as well. would the upgraded kernel fix this issue if you use the nvidia-legacy driver? the 2.6.14.4-2 kernel is in current right? thats the one i am using (it says 2.6.14-arch though when uname -r is used)
i did a new full (not just base) install using .7.1 pre-1 and am synched up to current and extra
also changing the driver back to nv works.

found this post and added nvidia to the daemons section of my rc.conf and all is right with the world again
