Studio 1558 heating issue

Hi all,

I'm having a heating issue with my Dell Studio 1558, to the point that it shuts itself down after an hour or so (when it gets to 90°C). I have configured lm-sensors, and it's kinda working (detects temp on cpu and gpu, but can't get fancontrol to work). The fan works, but it is half-way all the time, no matter how hot it is.

$ dmsg | grep cooling:
[    6.595537] acpi device:03: registered as cooling_device0

$ cat /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/cooling_device0/max_state
15
$ cat /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/cooling_device0/cur_state
0

Something weird happened when I tried to modify cur_state.. it turned my screen's brightness down... I don't thing that's supposed to happen, is it? :S

I have an ATI gpu with the opensource driver. I'm currently using ck-nahalem from repo-ck, but the issue is also there in the "default" kernel.

I found a couple of topics recommending "dellfand" and i8k. I haven't found dellfand anywhere (links appear to be down) and I'm not sure about installing i8k given mine isn't an inspiron or a latitude..

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
