Re: Why are there cuts in the Arch logo?

*Mind blown*
I have always believed the "Arch" came from the prefix "arch-" ie Archlinux is a "superior" Linux distro (which would be a bit pretentious even if it is true tongue). And so I always pronounced it "Ark Linux".

The cuts are nothing more than proof that PENGUINS BITE!  Linus* isn't the only victim. Enough is enough Tux should be locked up.

Re: Why are there cuts in the Arch logo?

I know this is old news (sorry for the bump, Jason!) , but I just want to say that I love seeing the many interpretations that folks have of the logo and related artwork.

For my own part, The Archer concept evolved from an earlier design I called The Nemesis, wherein I saw a silhouetted figure stepping out from behind a curtain. This seemed relevant to the project as I felt Arch was quickly emerging as a superior Linux distribution and aptly included the "Arch" prefix, further securing its role as a leading and foremost distribution.

The "cuts" themselves can be seen to represent a number of things, depending on your own interpretation of the project's name and meaning:

  • The cutting edge nature of the project itself

  • A flint-knapped arrowhead symbolizing archers as users of Arch Linux

  • The blades of two swords; the lower cut being the blade of the silhouetted figure (the Archer) seen within the logo, and the upper cut representing the blade of a soon-to-be dispatched opponent

Like all art, I think the logo is completely open to interpretation. In this case, it's whatever Arch means to you smile

To the pessimist, the glass if half empty.
To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

Why there are small 'cuts' in the upper-left and lower-right corners of the Arch logo?

They are speed notches.  They make the distro run faster tongue

I recently put one of the "Powered by Arch Linux" case badges on my laptop.  There is not a doubt in my mind that these must be speed notches, as my computer is at least 1392% faster! wink

Re: Why are there cuts in the Arch logo?

Because Arch is for the Other 99%...

[Note: I have no idea if this is too culturally specific a reference so if it means nothing to you, that is probably my fault.]

Re: Why are there cuts in the Arch logo?

I've always thought that ArchLinux was named so after the geometric shape, and that the logo was simply an old arch. This thread really gave some perspective.

Re: Why are there cuts in the Arch logo?

It's because Arch is emoware and it cut(tting edge)s itself by design. It's almost perfect, but I think they should have went with more vertical approach in order to fully integrate one of the less known KISS ideas - the infamous Acrosstheroadism Principle - do it once, but do it properly.

Re: Why are there cuts in the Arch logo?

Since the human mind cannot experience awesomeness in it's full form, we percieve the logo as having these "notches" because we cannot see 100% of the logo.

Re: Why are there cuts in the Arch logo?

Arch is supposed to be a "bleeding edged" (or you could say cutting edge distro).  Maybe the cuts should bring that to mind...
