[SOLVED] GNOME starts into black screen, crashing after a minute.

This is happening after recently upgrading GNOME to 3.8 from 3.6. I attempted to downgrade, but it still refuses to start.

Here's the Xorg log.

Re: [SOLVED] GNOME starts into black screen, crashing after a minute.

Welcome to the forum. There were a number of relevant threads with similar errors after the Gnome 3.8 upgrade. Have a search for them.
I remember some points to watch were manually removing gnome-screensaver (3.6 leftover) and switching to intel "SNA" accelaration in the xorg.conf.

Re: [SOLVED] GNOME starts into black screen, crashing after a minute.

Thanks for the reply.

I've attempted:
  -Removing gnome-screensaver
-Changing the acceleration method to SNA
-The occasionally mentioned "options i915 i915_enable_rc6=0" fix.
  -Reinstalling/Downgrading GNOME and friends.

Namely most of the things mentioned in here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=161900&p=4

It's also worth nothing that I'm starting GNOME with startx, rather than a login manager.

Re: [SOLVED] GNOME starts into black screen, crashing after a minute.

Did you see that SNA gets enabled?
Maybe the bug, mentioned here? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gn … .2B_cursor

Re: [SOLVED] GNOME starts into black screen, crashing after a minute.

Setting "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf" to the following is all I need to do to enable SNA, correct?

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
EndSection

If so, SNA should be enabled. Also,  I don't have any non-UTF8 locales enabled.

Thanks again.

Re: [SOLVED] GNOME starts into black screen, crashing after a minute.

I think I have a very similar problem with my gnome desktop.
starts into black screen, crashes after a minute. It shows an error message (gnome has crashed and can't recover, please log out).
However, I can Ctrl+Alt+Tab out of that message and use the gnome desktop anyway.
The problem appeared with the kernel upgrade 3.9 -> 3.10

Re: [SOLVED] GNOME starts into black screen, crashing after a minute.

Are you using a login-manager, themax? It changes to the better, if you downgrade the kernel?

Yes, that 20-intel.conf looks fine. You should see it being enabled in your Xorg.log (as in #1 it shows UXA was used).
Looking at that log, shows not really a crash, does it? Maybe this is worth a follow up

[ 3057.604] setversion 1.4 failed

Did you upgrade X11 along with gnome3.8?
Another thing to try at least would be

pacman -S gdm
systemctl start gdm

Just to see, if X stays - I don't have more pointers currently. No harm done, just remove it if it crashes as gracefully.

Re: [SOLVED] GNOME starts into black screen, crashing after a minute.

I tried entering GNOME with gdm.

Before gdm runs, it freezes at a black screen for about a minute, then flashes the "Oh No" screen.  Afterward, it allows me to login. After logging in, it freezes on the grey background of gdm for another minute. Once it displays the "Oh No" screen, it takes me back to a black screen, repeating the cycle.

Also, I upgraded X11 at the same time as GNOME.

Edit: Here's a recent Xorg log, if it helps.

Re: [SOLVED] GNOME starts into black screen, crashing after a minute.

The reason I asked about X11, was this coming up in google for that error: http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.f … ntel/19464
Probably a wrong path, but you could try what happens when you downgrade xorg-server to the previous version.
Or this one (both links are relating to drm): https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/34611
Have a look in journalctl, if grepping for "drm.i915" shows similar errors as in that bugreport.

Re: [SOLVED] GNOME starts into black screen, crashing after a minute.

Downgrading xorg-server did nothing. However, looking in journalctl after running GNOME revealed this:

-- Reboot --
Jul 29 16:06:25 dash pulseaudio[596]: [pulseaudio] bluetooth-util.c: org.bluez.Manager.GetProperties() failed: org.freedesktop.systemd1.LoadFailed: Un...

Jul 29 16:12:19 dash gnome-session[1064]: Unrecoverable failure in required component gnome-settings-daemon.desktop

Jul 29 16:12:20 dash gnome-session[1064]: Entering running state

So I decided to try re-installing gnome-settings-daemon. GNOME seems functional again. I'm not completely sure why that fixed it, but there it is.
I'll go ahead and mark the thread as solved.

Thanks much for guiding me to this conclusion, Strike0.

Re: [SOLVED] GNOME starts into black screen, crashing after a minute.

Hi, I've got the same error described by erdi13:

erdi13 wrote:

Before gdm runs, it freezes at a black screen for about a minute, then flashes the "Oh No" screen.  Afterward, it allows me to login. After logging in, it freezes on the grey background of gdm for another minute. Once it displays the "Oh No" screen, it takes me back to a black screen, repeating the cycle.

I've reinstalled gnome-settings-deamon, changed the locales, set  "options i915 i915_enable_rc6=0". Nothing helpes. Here is my error log:

Re: [SOLVED] GNOME starts into black screen, crashing after a minute.

I tried entering GNOME with gdm.

Before gdm runs, it freezes at a black screen for about a minute, then flashes the "Oh No" screen.  Afterward, it allows me to login. After logging in, it freezes on the grey background of gdm for another minute. Once it displays the "Oh No" screen, it takes me back to a black screen, repeating the cycle.

Thats exactly what's happening to me. Except the second Oh No-screen has an offset and I can see gnome-shell running behind it. I right click my background -> Properties and then the Oh No-screen is behind the gnome-shell. So it's kind of a workaround that works for me.
I'll see whether reinstalling gnome-settings-daemon solves it for me...

This thread is marked as SOLVED. Should I post my problem in a separate thread?

There are a couple of suggestions in this one you don't mention that you have tried them. But you seem to get different errors, so you best open a new thread with specifics about your config, graphic hw and non-working tries to solve it so far, yes.

Re: [SOLVED] GNOME starts into black screen, crashing after a minute.

What I am doing right now:
When it shows the oh no- screen, I go to a tty

ps-ef|grep session

somewhere I see

/usr/bin/gnome-session ... ... --allow-logout

then I kill this process.
It's still a workaround.
