Video playback broken

So I noticed about a day ago after an update both my VLC and (S)Mplayer(-vaapi) totally broke. I reverted VLC, mplayer and x268 to their respective previous package versions and I was able to restore VLC to be fully working and mplayer-vaapi now is about 50/50, with the error message being:

[VD_FFMPEG] XVMC-accelerated MPEG-2.
Movie-Aspect is undefined - no prescaling applied.
VO: [vaapi] 640x360 => 640x360 H.264 VA-API Acceleration
[VD_FFMPEG] XVMC-accelerated MPEG-2.

MPlayer interrupted by signal 11 in module: decode video
ID_SIGNAL=11
- MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM.

It really seems like something was up with the most recent x268 package and maybe VA-API. With the latest packages of everything, every movie in mplayer crashed with the above, but if I set it to say XV out, I would get a still frame and the movie would 'play' without updating the screen. I have the latest stable catalyst driver from the AUR.

Re: Video playback broken

I’m not using the testing repo, but SMPlayer with mplayer-vaapi also stopped working for me after an update about one week ago. Reverting mplayer-vaapi solved the problem (36265-1 was broken, but 35107-8 worked).

Now I just switched to mplayer2 with libvdpau-va-gl from the AUR.

Re: Video playback broken

Well that might explain why mplayer is still kind of messed up after reverting x264, but VLC is fine.

Re: Video playback broken

OK, so it looks like there was a bug filled against  this for VLC yesterday: FS#36315. I think it  also affects the mplayer-vaapi, too and commented on it. BTW, if anyone else has this issue, I found  rolling  back ffmpeg, vlc, mplayer-vaapi and x264 seems to do the trick (although mplayer-vaapi is still kind of wonky/won't play certain formats).
