kernel modules not loading automatically in 3.10?

Hello everyone,

After I've update to 3.10 (I think that that was the problem), my kernel modules seem not to load automatically anymore.
In the past, programs like efibootmgr and Virtual Box worked without a problem, now I have to manually load the appropriate kernel modules (efivars and vboxdrv, respectively) for the programs to work. I've done a quick check and it looks like I also have this problem on a different machine. Is this normal?

Thanks!

efivars is no longer loaded by default. I do know that so yes, that is normal. I believe it is a security feature. I don't know about virtual box, though.

You should have 3.10.5 if you are using the stable repositories. Did pacman -Syu go smoothly and did you reboot afterwards?

You can always add the VirtualBox module to modules-load.d.

Re: kernel modules not loading automatically in 3.10?

Thanks for your responses!

Yes, updating went fine and I'm now running linux 3.10.5-1 (also rebooted).
I'm aware that I can load them via modules-load.d, but I though it was neat that everything loaded automatically, and I just was wondering if this is expected behavior. If it is, I would update the wiki and such, but I'm still not sure why they would remove this. (I haven't heard anything about it)

Do you know of any other modules that I can test? That should be loaded automatically?

Thanks!

Re: kernel modules not loading automatically in 3.10?

Everything else seems loads fine. I guess it's just coincidence that the two modules I use aren't loaded automatically. I'll just add them to modules-load.d.

Thanks everyone!

Re: kernel modules not loading automatically in 3.10?

FWIW, VirtualBox never loaded automatically in my setup. KVM on the other hand loads everytime. Since I use KVM instead of VirtualBox I never had a problem. You may want to try by blacklisting KVM perhaps?

I think you are right, I somehow thought it did... but now I'm pretty sure it never did.

With the efivars change I think I just got confused and thought no modules were loading anymore. Sorry for not doing my research properly. Thanks for all the help! smile
