xine: "The audio device is unavailable"

It only happens when I use surround51 not with 2.0 stereo. It will let me get through the menus, but as soon as the dvd switches to using surround sound xine crashes with the error "the audio device is unavailable." However when I use mplayer with surround51, I do not have this problem.
This problem only occurs in certain dvds like Star Wars or Pirates of the Caribean. However, dvds like Lord of the Rings do not have this problem in xine.

Thanks for all your suggestions!

EDIT:
I found this on the gentoo boards here:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-33 … lable.html

~/.asoundrc:

pcm.nforce-hw {
type hw
card 0
}

pcm.!default {
type plug
slave.pcm "nforce"
}

pcm.nforce {
type dmix
ipc_key 1234
slave {
pcm "hw:0,0"
period_time 0
period_size 1024

#buffer_size 8192
buffer_size 32768
#buffer_size 21844
#buffer_size 4096
rate 48000
#rate 44100
}
}
ctl.nforce-hw {
type hw
card 0
}

changes to ~/.xine/config:

# device used for mono output
# string, default: default
audio.device.alsa_default_device:nforce

# device used for stereo output
# string, default: plug:front:default
audio.device.alsa_front_device:nforce

This gives me output from all my speakers except for my rear right speaker. I would really like for that speaker to work though!
Thanks again!
