I'm getting the same problem, though not sure what a solution is.

I've filed a bug report with dropbox. In their words, " Dropbox engineers are aware of the problem and are working on a solution. We do not directly support Arch-Linux, but we'll try to fix it!" That was a day after I posted in this thread...

Speaking of text-only notification-daemon written in C there is a nice program called SiND.
