Synapatics Touchscreen Intermittent failures

I recently bought a Lenovo P400 Touch off a buddy... and I can't get the touchscreen to work consistantly.

It shows up as a Synaptics "large touchscreen". I do have the xf86 synaptics package installed.

I'm using gnome 3.8.

From what I saw here, I'd tend to think it's an upstream bug... but then again, I don't have the referenced package installed; too lazy to go to the trouble of getting it from the, especially considering that the screen works once in awhile. Edit- just suspended and woke it up, it's working, just as described in the link.

Just making sure I've covered everything...
