[SOLVED] Several HW issues after update - don't know where to start

Hi everybody,
after a recent update the following things do not work anymore:
- Sound
- Mounting USB drives as a user / using the card reader
- The KDE Plasma Applet for NetworkManager does not show any connections anymore. Networking however works (Computer connects to known Wifis and LAN)

All packages but the kernel are up to date. Kernel version is 3.9.2-1-ARCH because of the current issues with rEFInd.
I guess the solution is rather simple like some daemon no running or so. My first guess was D-Bus, but that one seems to looks fine:

systemctl | grep dbus
dbus.service                loaded active running   D-Bus System Message Bus
dbus.socket                 loaded active running   D-Bus System Message Bus Socket

I just have no clue where to start looking, google was no real help so far. Maybe you guys could point me into a direction...
Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED] Several HW issues after update - don't know where to start

I forgot to mention another problem: Sometimes, when I want to shut the computer down (via KDE), the computer reboots. During the shutdown a message appears which says that KDE is running a stop job for shutdown (btw., whoever invented the Knight Rider like animation: You are a genius!). I can not reproduce the behavior, it just happens sometimes after a day of working with the computer.i

Maybe I have narrowed down the problem. During startup, systemd seems to cause problems. Here are the lines from dmesg -x:

Re: [SOLVED] Several HW issues after update - don't know where to start

The virtualbox module was probably built against a newer kernel and is causing module loading to fail. Either upgrade your kernel, use virtualbox-host-dkms instead of virtualbox-host-modules (that is, compile them yourself), or disable them.

edit: Actually, I'm not sure this is the case. Can you post the output of `lsmod`?

Also, do as systemd says and check your fstab.

Hmm, I am already using virtualbox-host-dkms, since there was no VirtualBox Kernel module for my old kernel available. The problem is, that for the next couple of days, I rely heavily on VirtualBox for work so I do not want to mess with it at the moment. And yes, VirtualBox is running just fine.

I already checked my fstab. There are no douplicate entries, I never changed the file since the first install.

Here's the output of lsmod

Re: [SOLVED] Several HW issues after update - don't know where to start

Hi,
I just upgraded my system again to kernel 3.10.3 and uninstalled all virtualbox packages. The problems from my first post (no sound, occasional reboot although I issued a shutdown, no internet connections in the KDE NetworkManager plasma widget, youtube videos not working properly (stopping after 2-3 seconds)) persist.

dmesg -x

Is this an upgrade-related issue at all? I am a little desperate since I don't know what to do sad

Re: [SOLVED] Several HW issues after update - don't know where to start

Hi everybody,
after a recent update the following things do not work anymore:
- Sound
Thanks!

I don't know about the other issues, but when I boot my laptop, sound doesn't work properly about 50% of the time.
I have to do this:

$ sudo rmmod -f snd-hda-intel
$ sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel

and it magically starts working. I believe it has to do with the order things are loaded in, but I tried some supposed workarounds with no luck.

Archcowboy - as the logs told you, there was a duplicate entry in fstab.  You mount to / twice.

Unfortunately this does not work for me...

Thank you for pointing that out. I totally missed this, must have been blind. I fixed it but still my original problems remain :-(

Solved the problem here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=168290.

PS: How do I mark the thread itself as [SOLVED]?

You can click the "edit" button on your first post (by the report and quote buttons).  Then you'll have a field to edit the title and prepend the word [SOLVED].
