gdm and gnome-shell fail to start (Gnome 3.8)

I upgraded with a pacman -S libsoup and then pacman -Syu, after enabling both testing and community testing.
The computer boots to a black screen which reads the usual sdx is clean, and the mouse pointer can be seen, but nothing else loads.
I tried:
* pacman -Syu again (I don't see the point, but it worked for someone somewhere else)
*adding "/boot/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=edc2be43-ab81-4b4d-99e7-1ec36f5e94c8 ro  quiet i915.i915_enable_rc6=0" to grub
*modifying .xinitrc to "exec gnome-shell" (which does nothing) and "exec gnome-session" (which yields the gdm sad face and I cannot load message)
*startx with exec ratpoison, which works fine

Here go the logs (please, do ask If I miss any pertinent log):
(/var/log/Xorg.2.log should be irrelevant, since gdm is supposed to start in tty0 or Control-Alt-F1, but /var/log/Xorg.0.log seems clean to me)

Re: gdm and gnome-shell fail to start (Gnome 3.8)

Have you tried to TTY to another display (ctrl+alt+f2) and 'sudo systemctl restart gdm.service' ? Else '~/.cache/gdm/session.log' might be of interest.

Re: gdm and gnome-shell fail to start (Gnome 3.8)

Tried the command, but got the same result (black screen with messages about sdX,Y,Z being clean, and floating cursor).
Had also tried killing gdm from htop, which didnt work either.

Here goes .cache/gdm/session.log

/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
localuser:guillermo being added to access control list
/etc/gdm/Xsession: ssh-agent not found!
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Setup done, will execute: gnome-session

Re: gdm and gnome-shell fail to start (Gnome 3.8)

Hard to say.. maybe try to go back to default theme and disable the extensions.

I am not sure but this Window manager warning: Log level 16: gnome-shell: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0 indicates that the resource is taken... Which might mean that it can't restart because another gnome-shell instance is already running.

Re: gdm and gnome-shell fail to start (Gnome 3.8)

-------------------------------This is no longer a testing repo problem, since 3.8 got moved to extra. A mod might want to move this thread somewhere else-------------------------------------------

Already went to the default theme (or  at least I deleted /etc/gdm and reinstalled gdm, cause I'm not sure where does gdm3setup keeps its configurations). Extensions were disabled by the upgrade. Didn't change anything.
I'm not sure what the warning is about, but I don't believe I have another gnome-shell instance running.

Here is /var/log/gdm/

Is the absence of the "fbdev" and "modesetting" modules relevant or strange?

Re: gdm and gnome-shell fail to start (Gnome 3.8)

Sounds like this bug:

https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/34893

In the meantime, you can try an alternative login manager like Slim or LightDM.

Re: gdm and gnome-shell fail to start (Gnome 3.8)

Yes. It seems many people are having some slightly different but closely related problems with gdm and gnome-shell. I'm currently using razor-qt + metacity, waiting for an update to fix this. The login manager is not really THE issue (slim works). The thing is gnome-shell won't start by any method.

Re: gdm and gnome-shell fail to start (Gnome 3.8)

Have you tried to change the AccelMethod between the UXA and SNA in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf ? I am not at home, can't test it ;(

Yeap, neither sna or uxa made any difference.  :S

Setting AccelMethod to sna did solve my problem. My box is running with an i3-2120 CPU.

Re: gdm and gnome-shell fail to start (Gnome 3.8)

I managed to fix both problems (currently typing this from gnome) by deleting the displaymanager.service & enabling gdm with systemctl.
