since last month I got three hard freeze (system stops respond, mouse cursor freezes)
my question is: how can I find the problem if systemd doesn't log to the journal ???
the last entry in the journal is

When you have what appears to be a hard freeze, you should always try to use the magic sysrq button. I don't know that it will bring more info, but it could since part of the sysrq reboot/shutdown procedure is to do an emergency sync of the disks. What I'm thinking is that any info that may have been in the journal that could have helped might have still been in the volatile part of the journal waiting to be flushed to disk... but just a guess.

Well then that just meants that the freezes you are experiencing are actually hard freezes. When the kernel is active, this will always work. So you can have every other component for the operating system totally f*cked up, but it doens't always mean that things are actually completely frozen. Often times users tend to think that when the xserver locks that their whole computer locks, so I'm just making sure that this was not the case.
Unfortauntely I'm not entirely sure where to go from here. Is there any common activity that you are doing when these things occur?

Always while watching video? Have you thought about trying to investigate in that area? I wonder if there is some similarity between what is being used to paly those files. Even if two totally different programs are being used, maybe they access the same libs? I don't know really since, you have only given a very broad description of what was going on.

You could try testing your RAM. I don't know if that would cause freezes but I was getting random program crashes when my RAM was bad, and the frequency increased when I was streaming video because of the increased RAM usage.

I have a dodgy old laptop running arch. Graphics card and RAM are not 100%. When my RAM usage gets over a certain rough percentage it freezes up entirely too.

after two full complete run (more than 1 hour and half) of memtest86+ (from our grub2 package)
it didn't show me any error
fortunately I haven't had no more crash. if I'll have one again, I'll perform another memtest86+ run, but this time longer than the previous

It could be a hard-drive error. I have had similar ones, especially while playing videos (probably due to the bulk I/O operations).
To see if any errors are showing in your drive, install smartmontools and post the output of
# smartctl -a /dev/sdX
replace sdX with your drive (not partition).

Well I don't see any problem in the logs. The last error was at 494 hours, which happened very early in the drive's life. Maybe you should try running an "extended self-test".

I've been having this issue as well. Still continues.
I'm using XFCE - I have not tried if this is reproducible in other environments.
The freeze mostly happens when using YouTube on Chrome. I suspect it might have something to do with either chrome or flash.
No data in journal. No suspicious data in dmesg.

I've probably found the issue!
nouveau or better the VDPAU capabilities could be the problem....
hard freezes (described here) stop time ago (now I can speculate about nouveau progresses....)
now I have soft freezes who allow me to read errors in dmesg.....and.....I find many nouveau entry

I've probably found the issue!
nouveau or better the VDPAU capabilities could be the problem....hard freezes (described here) stop time ago (now I can speculate about nouveau progresses....)
now I have soft freezes who allow me to read errors in dmesg.....and.....I find many nouveau entry

For what it's worth, I'm having the same problem. I'm using VDPAU settings in a mythtv setup to drive an HD TV--but with the nvidia driver instead of the nouveau. If I stay with the 3.16.4-1 kernel and the 343.22-2 nvidia driver, all is well. If I upgrade past those, I'll get a hard freeze--eventually. Sometimes in a few minutes--just now it took about an hour.
