OK that was too quick sad The leak is still present but fills my RAM very much slower... Needed near one hour instead of about 5 minutes with beta 1 for making the system unusable. HTPC only has 4GB and no swap.
When I don't want to mess up my whole system for Xorg 1.13, there is no alternative to this beta version, right?

@And1G: Have you let loose with something heavy like TF2 yet?

Sorry but the RAM was filled only much slower so I did not realize it until the system froze. Memory leak still present...
Also, I don't have games on that computer.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

little problem on my sistem: linux-header get updated AFTER updating linux... so fgrlx build always fail and then i'veto manually realunch "mkinitcpio -p linux" after the update. This fix the problem.

I can also report system freeze plaing intensive game like TF2. i'll take a look at ram usage, if you can help m,e pointing out a valid resource to do so. maybe xrestop?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@Lesto: This is a known problem since the SyncFirst option (I think it was this option anyways) was deprecated from pacman. The three ways I can think to get around this are to:

1) Run mkinitcpio -p [kernel] as you suggested (not all of us run the core kernel, like moi). Also, this generates all modules for the kernel, not just for Catalyst;
2) Run catalyst_build_module all after everything is updated. This updates the fglrx modules for all kernels installed (moi);
3) Install and run catalyst-hook or catalyst-generator and run as explained here.

As for recording RAM, just load up TF2, close the program and then read off the RAM usage with whatever you would use.

@And1G: That's unfortunate...

If you've enabled (not just started, enabled as well) catalyst-hook.service you should be fine (it will check on shutdown, not reboot, if the module needs updating and do it then). I do number 2 (via sudo) of my three suggestions after each kernel and catalyst upgrade because I then know I've built the module myself.

I'm using catalyst-test package
just reeboted my system, now minimizing windows and seems like ani kwion effect break everything. The Desktop (Kde) run, but i get black screen with sometimes transparency effect, or a mosaic of the desktop and it's windows.
Killing X from console (ctrl-alt-fX) run systemd-journal at 100% (but no log-spam on the journal?! using journalctl -b)
safe mode (no kwin) seems ok, also a game run smooth.

@nullwiz: It looks like the good old compiling of modules before linux-headers is installed or the point that Vi0L0 only compiles his/her packages against one kernel. Have you tried building the module manually with my second suggestion of this post?

PowerXpress support is currently testing-only, so try to wait for Vi0L0, I think he knows better about this.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

By the way, does catalyst-utils-pxp work with HD 2/3/4k, if I want to test it? Uncle's notebook has HD4xxx discrete GPU and Intel integrated video. Drivers on win7 were last updated at 2010, and discrete GPU never worked with prop blobs on Ubuntu and it's derivates.

I believe that you would be looking for the versions in the catalyst-hd234k repository, but yes. You will need to use the corresponding versions of the X server as well.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I recently reinstalled Arch from scratch on a new SSD on a system running 2 7950s.  Now with tear free desktop enabled I get 30 Hz (tested using glxgears).  This makes my desktop session pretty laggy feeling.  I'm running KDE with kwin.  Anyone know the fix for this?

To clarity:  I didn't have any problems before with a single card, and I don't have Crossfire enabled.  I also tested in fluxbox, so it's not a kwin thing.

Looks like I'm not the only one.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi guys, I'm having a bit of an issue with my ATi HD 5850.

So, first I installed the xf86-video-ati, and it all was working pretty good, with except of two things:
1) Somewhat slow-looking scroll on a page, but just tiny, it didn't felt fluid, but not problem to work with.
2) VSync-off-like artifacts on videos. To be clear, this are the "invisible" lines that appear like cutting the image, specially during high-motion scenes or camera moving.

The first one, I preffered solved, but could work with. But the second one is unacceptable, as I like watching movies on my PC.
So I tried with the unoffical repo (Vi0L0 ones), with the catalyst-hook. Used aticonfig, and got xorg running ok.
But now, problem #2 was still happening, and also the system feels much slow, specially scrolling on a page.
I've decided to try the official package from ATi, installed it successfully but still getting the same results as with the one's from Vi0L0.
Am I doing something wrong with these drivers? I've followed the instructions from the wiki and done some searchs, though I didn't get problems when installing, definately it isn't working alright.

So far, my best results where with the xf86-video-ati. Which I liked, but it just annoys me the video reproduction issue, I just can't watch a movie like that... have any of you experimented something like this or know how to fix it??
Thanks.-

On the Phoronix Forums (read the first few posts, found via a Google search) running

 chmod -R 777 /proc/ati/

should solve that problem.

That worked. Now I get with my user the same outputs I'd get as root.
But, still videos looks the same, and scrolling, and, i.e. moving a window, still looks slow.

Glxgears seems to be performing okay though:

$ fgl_glxgears
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
12705 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2541.000 FPS
12603 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2520.600 FPS
13296 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2659.200 FPS

Tear free never worked for me on any of this year's Catalyst versions. You should disable it and if you can't stand the tearing, try to turn on tearing prevention in KWin's settings. For me, it doesn't get rid of all of the tearing, though, but I guess that's because of my dual monitor setup.

Also, vsync in any 3D game enabled causes heavy input delay with Catalyst on Linux... Hope they fix that soon.

Yea, I played around with that option a little bit.  ATI drivers really are a joke -__-.  I ordered 2 more monitors for eyefinity.....I can only imagine the pains that await me getting them working properly in Linux.

BTW, tear free has always worked for me.  The only time I experienced this 30 FPS drop was when I added a second 7950 and installed Arch on a new SSD.  I'm not sure if there's some old entry in amdpcsdb that was saving me before......but my options seem to be tearing or lagging.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I'm still looking into the bootsplash issue, and I was wondering if anyone knew, or would care to write, a kernel module that just answers KMS requests with a predefined resolution?
That way a bootsplash would work, and we could get native resolution terminals on dual-head setups.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Meh, still the memory leak with Catalyst + Source games. What are you doing, AMD?

On the other hand, I tested the open-source driver radeon and: Left 4 Dead 2 is really smooth and according to the Half-Life 2 Lost Coast benchmark, the open-source driver is already faster than the Catalyst driver! (91,50 fps radeon vs. 82.22 Catalyst)

I have a HD 6670 and tested it with Mesa 9.2rc. I did not test it with Linux 3.11 and the new DPM, which might give it an additional boost and I don't know if this new "shader backend" is already enabled in Mesa 9.2rc. I heard, it makes the radeon driver even faster (but I guess, it is already enabled, because the Source games are already faster than with Catalyst, also no input lag with radeon).

So I am very pleased with the recent developement of the open-source radeon driver. Now they need proper OpenGL 3.x and OpenGL 4.x support and I can dump the Catalyst driver for good.

You should really enable both the DPM and the new shader backend and test if it runs even faster. I was able to replace the Catalyst driver with the open source one on my Laptop because the new DPM boosted the battery life instead of making it worse and it's just perfect.
