Hmm when I watch my system boot, the slowest booting device seems to be the Network :: < OK > :: section. Takes a good six or so seconds! Any idea on how to speed that up? I'm guessing my dodgy adsl modem is causing this.

I find I get a quicker boot when I dont shut down the system at all.
There ought to be hdparm support in the initscripts, setting the right things on your hard drive can make a huge difference. Search the gentoo wiki, theres a great article there.
