I've been having this issue for some time now, and my intermittent googling has yet to find anything remotely related, so hopefully someone here will have some clues as to a solution. The issue occurs when I'm playing a stream (from twitch.tv) via mpv or mplayer using rtmpdump and the vdpau video output. If I have compton running with the --vsync opengl option, when I switch away from and back to the workspace containing the player (using i3 wm), the player will almost always freeze completely, forcing me to kill it with a ctrl+c in the terminal or a SIGTERM. I'm using the proprietary nvidia drivers, and disabling flipping and sync to vblank in the opengl settings there has no effect. The issue does not occur when playing local media, when I run dcompmgr or compton without --vsync, or when I use a video output other than vdpau (however, those usually result in audio/video desync). Does anyone have any idea how I might resolve this issue using my current setup or an alternative to compton which can fix tearing when moving/scrolling windows?
