Hmmm… I'm afraid it's mainly of historical value these days (at least when used with dependencies available in Arch and without update to the code)…

You're certainly right about (La)TeX as a base for a collaboration platform where not only viewing and annotating, but also changing the content comes to terms. LyX could probably be considered the easiest--from an average end user's perspective--implementation of the concept. However, as user friendly as it may seem to be for those familiar with it, for most people it would probably still remain cryptic and bizarre. The WYSIWYG magic and the obvious word processor experience have become appealing and wanted illusions…

I think that despite its drawbacks, the book can still offer a few valuable pieces of information and useful hints that can improve the look and readability of documents being produced. Still, it's a shame that free tools and resources are treated as second class alternatives even by some pros… sad

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

I didn't mean to write it off completely. There is certainly good information there. The attitude to free fonts and software (especially LaTeX) just irritated me and I think certainly detracts from the value of the resource, even though there is obviously still a great deal of accurate and useful information there.

Just in case anybody comes across this thread and wants to see that TeX can do, The TeX Showcase shows a variety of TeX's capabilities. (Note that some examples use proprietary fonts but by no means all.) This leaflet is a particularly useful example in terms of the range of features covered (though it only scratches the surface, even so).

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Infinality looks much better, on KDE, now than they looked a month or so ago. I wasn't aware that KDE has its own fonts ttf-oxygen. If they could look a little less cramped and slightly thicker it would be perfect.

Download the files

and replace the ones you have in /etc/fonts/conf.avail.infinality. Oxygen still needs to be polished by the upstream, but this should improve the experience.

Would you recommend those two config files for KDE users in general, or are they more for people that use ttf-oxygen?
The only reason I'm reluctant to use ttf-oxygen is because it conflicts with ttf-google-webfonts.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Those files work well with Oxygen fonts available in the ttf-oxygen, so yes, I think they are better than the ones from Google fonts. By the way, what you're writing about is the main reason to stay away from such huge font collections like ttf-google-webfonts… If you really want to keep all the families but Oxygen, keep ttf-google-webfonts and replace manually only those particular files. You can also rebuild the package without Oxygen and install ttf-oxygen instead. The latter option seems safe & sane to me. Hopefully one day the same version of Oxygen is available in all major collections, though.

Thanks for the config files. Oxygen fonts aren't ready for prime time. I will probably go back to good old Droid Sans or Open Sans. Droid Sans is the only font that looks good on KDE.

You can also check Lucida Grande (Regular, 8) or Myriad (Web) Pro. I've been using the former successfully in all sorts of DEs/WMs and it always looks great.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

I've decided to abandon Google fonts and what a difference it has made!

Ironically, font rendering in Chromium looks much better.

Before:
With Google fonts

After:
Without Google fonts

The "before" screenshot is far too bold for my liking and the "after" screenshot is more similar to font rendering in Firefox, even with Google fonts installed.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

You mean this one is better: click? It definitely is to me. Did you reinstall the fonts you'd been using after removing the ttf-google-webfonts package? I guess in your case it'd be wise to keep the fonts you've been used to. The point isn't to break what's been working well for the price of a single family, I believe. wink

With the latest KDE update troubles, I've decided to start with a clean slate (a.k.a. deleting ~/.kde4), so I'm using standard "Sans Serif" which I think is Arial. For monospace, though, I use DejaVu Sans Mono Book.

Anyway, I'm really pleased with how it looks and I don't think I will miss Google web fonts.

The strange thing, however, is that with Google fonts installed, rendering in Firefox was still normal, but that was not the case with Chromium.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Chromium behaves odd at times… Have you tried using a different webkit browser to see if the same happens? I'm using dwb and the rendering is quite similar to Firefox's.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

hello,
i'm still having the problem decribed on page15:

# sudo pacman -Syu
:: Synchronizing package databases...
 testing is up to date
 core is up to date
 extra is up to date
 community-testing is up to date
 community is up to date
 multilib-testing is up to date
 multilib is up to date
error: infinality-bundle.db appears to be truncated: 17312/0 bytes
error: failed to update infinality-bundle (failed to retrieve some files)
error: infinality-bundle-multilib.db appears to be truncated: 17312/0 bytes
error: failed to update infinality-bundle-multilib (failed to retrieve some files)

i think i tried everything suggested:

- remove the infinality*.db files in /var/lib/pacman/sync
- changed settings in pacman.conf as in this post
- did as described in this post

...after every change i did "sudo pacman -Syu" and the output is always exactly as shown above.
i'm stumped.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

I believe you have the following repositories in your /etc/pacman.conf:

[infinality-bundle]
Server = http://ibn.net63.net/infinality-bundle/$arch

[infinality-bundle-multilib]
Server = http://ibn.net63.net/infinality-bundle-multilib/$arch

-- as stated in the Wiki?

Happens from time-to-time. Wait, retry. Consult your doctor in case symptoms persist.

By the way, the new version of Okular seems to have some new options for text rendering under Settings > Configure Okular > Performance. I found that 2 of 3 options were checked (antialias for text and graphics) but the other was not (text hinting). I think enabling the third option improves things. Note that you have to enable it for each document you have open but that it then seems to be automatically configured if you open a new document.

Just thought that might be helpful to somebody.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

cairo 1.12.16 has been released. As the upstream code seems to be working fine in our configuration and I haven't observed any problems so far, I decided to publish new packages.

Thanks and enjoy.

Dropbox's multilib cario is still version 1.12.14-7 but it seems to have been updated along with the other architecture's packages. Was this intentional?

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Nope. That's evidently my mistake (the same old version is in the repo). The new package will be available in the repo and Dropbox in a couple of minutes. Thanks for reporting and sorry for that nonsense. wink

Edit: OK, done. Source packages are up to date as well.

Why did you do that? The message is warning you you are relying on a deprecated file and you respond by disabling the warning?!!
