Cannot play audio CD

Hello.

I have a fresh arch linux install in my computer and i cannot play or rip any audio CD. I ve tried with VLC and with audacious but nothing happened. The /dev/sr0 exists as the /dev/cdrom (which is a symlink) too.

I read many threads in this forum on this issue but couldn't helped me.

Some more ideas ?

Re: Cannot play audio CD

It could be an hardware problem. Please provide more details such as:

1. Were you using another OS before and was it working with previous system?
2. Is this problem spesific for audio CD's?

Re: Cannot play audio CD

It isn't hardware problem cause before arch all worked well with ubuntu and slackware.

So as we know we cannot mount a device like audio CD or empty disk with mount command and thats the result we get:

mount: /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0,
       missing codepage or helper program, or other error

       In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so.

So if i try to open it with VLC it returns me this error:

Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'cdda:///dev/cdrom'. Check the log for details.

and from audacious

No decoder found for cdda://.
or
No decoder found for /dev/cdrom.

Re: Cannot play audio CD

I think VLC needs

pacman -Ss libcdio

Re: Cannot play audio CD

A good way to see what kinds of things you might need for something like vlc is to look at the optional dependencies for the package.  So if you do pacman -Qi vlc if the package is installed on your system already, or pacman -Si vlc if not yet installed, you can see in the output what kinds of optional dependencies there are.  Typically there is a short description of the extra functionality that the optional dependency can provide as well.

So in the case of vlc (and the libcdio optional dep) I get:

$ pacman -Qi vlc
Name           : vlc
<SNIP>
Optional Deps  : avahi: for service discovery using bonjour protocol [installed]
                 <SNIP SOME MORE>
                 projectm: for ProjectM visualisation plugin
                 libcaca: for colored ASCII art video output [installed]
                 libgme: for libgme plugin [installed]
                 librsvg: for SVG plugin [installed]
                 gnome-vfs: for GNOME Virtual File System support
                 libgoom2: for libgoom plugin
                 vcdimager: navigate VCD with libvcdinfo [installed]
                 xosd: for xosd support
                 aalib: for ASCII art plugin [installed]
                 libmtp: for MTP devices support [installed]
                 smbclient: for SMB access plugin [installed]
                 libcdio: for audio CD playback support [installed]
                 ttf-freefont: for subtitle font
                 ttf-dejavu: for subtitle font [installed]
                 opus: for opus support [installed]
                 libssh2: for sftp support [installed]
<SNIP>
